Spoilers for MAFS Australia ahead!

It’s not shaping up to be the strongest year for the Married at First Sight Australia matchmakers — or their contestants. Sudden dropouts like Brook and Chris, and Sam and Chris, have left the experiment wobbling, while pairings like Tyson and Steph, and Juliette and Joel, felt pretty hopeless from the start. At this point, is all our hope resting on Stella and Filip?

Usually, even when couples aren’t working out on a reality show like Married at First Sight Australia, you can at least cling to the friendships. Sometimes, the strongest bonds on shows like Love Is Blind or Love Island emerge from the wreckage of disastrous romances. But Married at First Sight Australia 2026 seems to be defying all logic, with heated feuds completely overtaking any sense of the original “search for love” premise.

While Bec Zacharia has been at the centre of much of the drama, her fury hasn’t typically been directed at Rachel Gilmore. The two seemed to get along, with cheerful Rachel usually staying out of the main feuds. That changed at the couple’s retreat.

What happened between Bec and Rachel at the couples' retreat?

Our remaining couples head off on a retreat, and it could be a pleasant experience for all… but obviously, it isn't. The cast all gather together, and in the trailer, Bec can be heard saying: “Ladies and gentlemen, can I have you guys over here, please? It’s the first night of the retreat, we’ve had…”

Her words immediately leave co-stars stunned, with Steve describing the moment as “vulgar,” and even Juliette looking visibly shocked. Shortly afterwards, Rachel (in tears) can be heard saying: “I just want to leave… I’m so sick of this.”

The narrator of Married at First Sight Australia then teases the fallout: “The happy couples are all singing Kum ba yah until… one bad joke sends the retreat into meltdown. What is the punchline that will break bonds and derail the course of the experiment forever?”

It’s clear that a joke Bec made to Rachel did not land well, and what follows looks set to completely upend the retreat's already fragile dynamics.

What did Bec say about Rachel on MAFS?

Before the argument, Rachel opens up to her co-stars, saying, “I wanted to share an update in mine and Steve’s relationship. Last night, our intimacy levels increased. While we have not banged yet, it’s really exciting.”

But later, Bec decides to address the entire group and gets a little too loose with her words.

“I wanted to call you all here because it’s the first night of retreat and we’ve had ‘I love yous,’ we’ve had a couple that I thought could not come back from the brink of hell, and we’ve had finger bangs, so like…” she says, prompting cheers from the group.

Bec’s partner Danny points out that Rachel is upset, but she continues with her speech regardless, “It’s been a great night one. I think we need to cheers to new friendships and getting to know each other. Drink up and go to bed because tomorrow’s a big day!”

How did Rachel react to what Bec said on MAFS?

Unsurprisingly, Rachel is not amused by Bec’s speech and the ensuing FingerbangGate, saying, “I didn’t think it was funny. She turned something Steven and I were so excited about into a joke."

The other women also criticised Bec’s lack of tact, leaving her visibly upset in return. Bec and Juliette enter a confrontation so heated that they have to be separated by Stella. Bec and Danny then choose to leave the retreat.

During the episode itself, Bec appeared more angry than remorseful — though since then, she has reportedly had a change of heart.

Rachel later revealed to Mamamia that Bec has since apologised to her directly, saying: “She was sorry for the intent — the joke — but she wasn’t sorry for the impact. The impact was that I felt humiliated and shamed. A joke at my expense, especially one that is extremely sexual and puts my body on display, is not okay.”

On the Australian companion show MAFS: After The Dinner Party, Bec apologised again, this time publicly. Rachel responded that now she’s learned more about the context of why Bec made that joke, she felt she “was overreacting” at the time.

Bec pushed back, saying: “No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. You’re not overreacting, because what you feel is what you feel and you are allowed to feel what you feel. What I said was completely politically incorrect. I have the most vulgar sense of humour.”

She later admitted on Bold Delight that “the comment was ridiculous,” explaining, “At that moment, I thought it was the language used. I didn’t know the actual effect on Rachel or how it would diminish the place that her and Steven had gotten to.”

Are Bec and Rachel friends after MAFS Australia?

The pair don’t appear to have any ongoing beef now, months after filming wrapped. In that episode of MAFS: After The Dinner Party, they seemed to be firmly back on good terms, and Bec has since shared TikToks of her and Rachel hanging out outside of the show. Clips show Bec and Danny when they were on better terms. (No sign of Gia and Scott, unsurprisingly.)

In March, Bec also commented, “So lucky to have Rach in my life” and “I’ll never lose Rach and she will never lose me.”

We love to see the girlies getting along!
