The best maternity clothes, according to a fashion editor

Dressing a bump can actually be so chic. Who knew?
19 Best Maternity Clothes According To A Fashion Editor
Charlie Teather

But thanks to a growing roster of brilliant maternity brands, you can still look amazing and embrace your personal style in your new pregnancy body. Rather than splurge on endless new items that you'll never wear again after birth, we implore you to invest in carefully selected clothing and incorporate them into your maternity wardrobe.

Why you can trust us

Website Director, Bianca London, Commerce Photo Editor, Neamh Randall, and Fashion Editor, Charlie Teather, all became first time (and in Bianca's case, second-time too!) mums over the last few years, and - alongside, you know, prepping for one of humankind's toughest physical feats and the subsequent life-altering reality of a tiny new human to care for 24/7 - rediscovering how to dress a body that was changing every single day posed a real challenge.

We didn't want to lose our personal style identities - which, conveniently for those of you reading this for inspo, are all very different to one another's - but we also wanted to celebrate and not just ‘disguise’ this incredible moment in our lives. And if we were finding this balance hard to strike, after working our whole adult lives in the fashion and magazine industry, we figured others must be too. So we made it something of a personal/professional mission to compile the ultimate guide. If for nothing more than for us to refer back to if/when we ever do this pregnancy thing again, because (spoiler alert) baby brain is no joke, people…

How we tested the best maternity clothes

Charlie, Bianca, and Neamh used our own pregnancies as the perfect excuse to trial run the best maternity styles out there and compile this edit. We shopped for sartorial staples from independent, designer and high street maternity brands during our second and third trimesters (with varying success), and have also asked our well-dressed pregnant pals and new mums for their top tips to find high-quality maternity wear. Not to mention, we've scoured Instagram for the ultimate inspiration too. For mums-to-be, Glamour's edit of the best maternity clothing brands of 2026 is essential reading…

While they do produce a small selection of jeans and joggers, it's Lovall's leggings offering that lands itself a spot on this list. With a variety of silhouettes and colourways, the have mastered fabrication so much that their maternity leggings are not only a perfect option for pregnancy yoga sessions but also for a those much-needed days spent lying on the sofa feeling your baby doing somersaults in there.

The fleeced leggings in particular are a must-have for those of you approaching a heavily-pregnant winter.

For a brand that quite literally devotes itself to the female body, it would be disappointing if Kim K had bypassed such a major ‘body’ moment in many women's lives. Luckily she's pretty savvy (and, of course, a mother of four), so there was no danger of such a misstep. But does it live up to the rest of the critically-acclaimed collection? Fear not, this is a resounding yes. Perhaps the comfiest, second-skin style maternity lingerie out there, there is a wide range of styles and shapes to ensure that you can pick exactly the style you usually would – it just has a little extra room.

Charlie, for example, is a thong girl through and through. She's not worn anything else in well over a decade - and yes, that includes being nine months pregnant (and 12 hours post-partum! Admittedly, the giant pads struggled to straddle that tightrope) - and can confirm that the Skims high-waisted thong was the perfect maternity option.

3. Next Maternity

Looking for a party dress to wear while pregnant? Some new maternity swimwear that'll fit your bump while you sunbathe on your next holiday? Next maternity has got you covered. The retailer carries 14 maternity brands, but their own label picks is where it's really at. See below for proof.

Pro-tip: Don't sleep on non-maternity shirt dresses. If you're anything like Charlie, buy them oversized, live in them throughout pregnancy and you'll soon discover how perfect they are post-birth too for both breastfeeding and your (again!) changing body. They get bonus points from post-caesarean mamas, too, as they skim over the scar that (trust us!) doesn't welcome any sort of waist band.

Forever a fan-favourite, for those of us who favour a little non-maternity-maternity fashion action at certain points throughout those nine months would do well to look to Net-A-Porter - particularly when it comes to occasion-wear. Because, let's face it, if anything is going to make you feel out of your comfort zone when your body has grown to twice its usual size in what feels like five minutes it's dressing for a big occasion.

With oversized, billowing silhouettes one of the retailer's strong suits, you know you're in safe (read: comfortable!) hands with NAP. Bonus points galore in that you can re-wear these pieces well beyond pregnancy. When the bump gets married one day, perhaps?

Nicole Trunfio created Bumpsuit during her third pregnancy. “I wanted to wear something chic, that felt like a second skin, that I didn't have to think about when I woke up in the morning ready to wrangle two very demanding kids. I just didn't have time anymore to try on and see what fits… I wanted something that could be my 'go-to' layer, so that all I needed to do was accessorise,” she said. Everything at Bumpsuit ticks those very boxes and is virtually seamless, so there's nothing digging in or causing discomfort.

No edit of the best maternity clothes would be complete without one of the retailers that hold up every British high street, M&S. We can safely assume most women in the UK own at least one M&S non-maternity bra / bikini / pair of knickers or tights – so add maternity dresses and some bestseller maternity swimwear to that list. The maternity range is second-to-none: high in quality, comfortable (read: stretchy) considerately-crafted and timeless. Think: a capsule wardrobe to last you the nine months you're pregnant and beyond.

New Look maternity-wear has got you covered when it comes to pregnancy clothes, with items that are just as fashionable as the pieces in your main collection - plus they're super purse-friendly, too.

For summer pregnancies we'd suggest adding maternity swimwear, a maxi dress and a pack of maternity tops (which you can also wear as breastfeeding tops) to your basket, and for winter pregnancies we recommend stretchy leather look leggings, V-neck jumpers and floaty skirts to layer with tights and see you through 'til baby arrives.

Bump & Milk was founded by Alex, a mum to two boys who has experienced every high and low of new motherhood. She wanted to create a maternity brand which was the opposite of the frumpy smock and breastfeeding cliché – stocking chic, long maternity dresses to breastfeeding hoodies and everything in between. They're all about confident style that feels like “you” and will work postpartum too.

Admittely not strictly a maternity label, Kindred of Ireland is one of Charlie's favourite labels right now full-stop - and thanks to their generous silhouettes they just so happen to be perfectly accommodating towards a growing bump. Think oversized dresses, billowing blouses, jumpsuits without even a hint of a waistband… They're the coolest, chicest pieces that'll last you throughout pregnancy and well beyond.

What to consider when shopping for maternity clothing

Buy maternity clothes that make you feel ‘like you’: Just because you're becoming a mum doesn't mean you need to totally reinvent your personal style. As founder and creative director of Beyond Nine, Naomi Raybould, explains: “At a time when your body is rapidly changing and it may not quite feel like your own, keeping your identity via the way you dress is a worthy investment. The bonus of shopping this way, is that you'll want to continue wearing the clothes long after your baby is born too. The ultimate compliment for me is when a customer pulls on an item of our clothing and tells me they feel like themselves in it.”

Shop for investment pieces that will last you long beyond pregnancy: Here at Glamour, we're all about making sustainable sartorial choices and we implore you to keep that up in your pregnancy. While maternity-specific pyjamas and nursing tops (or maternity tops) might be a necessity, as a general rule of thumb, you should choose an oversized blazer and floaty midi dress or wrap dress that you'd consider wearing post-pregnancy. You can still take feeding options into account with this approach (you can't go wrong with a shirt dress or a classic baggy white T-shirt). I invested in some great Seraphine dresses that had secret zips for breastfeeding access that were subtle enough that people didn't know they were actually pregnancy clothes.

Switch up your basics: Thankfully basics won't break the bank so I'd recommend stocking up on some trusty basics like stretchy vests, comfy black leggings and forgiving hoodies for layering. They'll be your go-to wardrobe staples in the later stages of pregnancy and even carry you through the early days when you can't be bothered to leave the house in anything other than loungewear.

Choose fabrics carefully: According to the Seraphine Design Team, when purchasing the best maternity clothing it is important to consider the fabric the piece is made of as the feeling of skin sensitivity can be heightened during pregnancy. “We always source soft fabrics that are gentle and comfortable on the skin to ensure that comfort doesn’t have to be sacrificed for great style for our customers throughout their pregnancy journey,” they say.

What month should you start wearing maternity clothes?

This is entirely your call: you could start wearing the above stylish maternity clothes when you no longer feel comfortable in your normal outfits, even if that's in your first trimester. Generally, most pregnant women will begin wearing maternity clothes when their regular 'fits feel tight, which might be a few weeks into their second trimester - perhaps around 13-16 weeks onwards. But don’t forget, your maternity style is totally down to you.

Should I size up in maternity clothes? Or do you buy the same size in maternity clothes?

Your maternity size is likely to be around the same size as you were pre-pregnancy - most brands recommend choosing the same size in maternity pieces. So, if you wore a size 10 in jeans pre-baby, you'll probably be fine to wear a size 10 in maternity jeans when you're expecting. Of course, it's a bit of trial and error – but maternity sizes are generally the same as non-maternity sizes, just with extra panels or adjustment to fit around your bump and growing baby.

What brand has the best maternity clothes?

While specific favourite brands will depend on your personal style, there are so many options out there for maternity fashion right now. Whether you head to maternity-specific retailers like Seraphine, Bumpsuit, Jojo Maman Bebe, Beyond Nine and Bump & Milk, your go-to labels with a maternity edit like Next, M&S, ASOS, Mango, Nike and New Look, or just buy oversized silhouettes from the expert curators at Net-A-Porter and Nobody's Child, once you find the styles that feel the most ‘you’ getting dressed in the morning will soon start to feel like a joy once again.
