The best baby changing bags change the game. It's no secret that leaving the house with a baby or toddler in tow requires planning of military-level precision – and a hefty checklist. From baby bottles; formula (or a breast pump) to nappies, baby wipes, spare clothes, muslins and toys, the essentials add up. With this never-ending packing list, it’s safe to say parents need a Mary Poppins-style nappy bag to house everything in an organised fashion.
Whether you're heading to a baby sensory class, the park, or the airport for a family getaway, a reliable and stylish changing bag is a non-negotiable. Registered midwife, Charlotte Hoskins, put it perfectly: “A baby changing bag is more than just a bag – it's a lifesaver for parents and caregivers on the go.” Plus, it can be used from your first-born child to your third, growing with your family well beyond the newborn stage.
The best nappy bags come in all shapes and sizes, from rucksacks and cross-body bags, to pram-friendly designs. And super-sized baby changing bags that house everything bar the kitchen sink. Some are crafted from real leather or vegan leather, while others feature a quilted or printed exterior. Your choice may include a changing mat to create a make-shift changing station when on-the-go, as well as insulated compartments to keep pre-made baby bottles warm. A saving grace for those bottle feeding their little one. While a unisex design is often preferred, ultimately, the best baby changing bags are built to last, and easy to clean.

How we tested baby changing bags
At GLAMOUR, it's of upmost importance that we provide honest and real recommendations – so when I was curating this edit of the best nappy bags, I called on relatives, friends and colleagues who have little ones. Most mums I spoke to invested in one baby changing bag for their first born – and they've used the same one since, every day, from newborn to three-years-old. (Our honest mums revealed if they had replaced their changing bag for baby number two). Those bags had to go in this edit. It's safe to say these mums have truly put their baby changing bags through rigorous testing.
The main factor the busy mums noted was whether the bag had enough compartments, both inside and outside of the bag. Parents don't want to be rummaging around a bag for nappies or a muslin cloth in an emergency. They detailed whether the bags had sections for wet and dry products, clean and used baby bottles, as well as spare or soiled clothes.
Another noteworthy style feature for mums was making sure the designated pockets for bottles could actually fit their baby bottles. Shockingly, not all nappy bags did.
Elsewhere, our reviewers were looking for convenience. Does the bag have insulated compartments? Multi-way straps? Include a baby changing mat or buggy clips so you can go hands-free to nurse a hungry baby, or push the pram? Other key features they reflected on was if the bag was comfortable to wear, lightweight, durable, compatible with their buggy, and easy to clean.
Lastly, our honest mums revealed that style was a contributing factor, too, and unisex designs played a role in their hunt for the best baby changing bag. Especially as some partners didn't want to wear a pink fluorescent baby changing bag when they took the kids out. We get it.

Why do you need a baby changing bag?
If you’re wondering whether you really need a dedicated baby changing bag, the answer from numerous parenting experts, and mums alike, is an unanimous yes – a canvas tote bag, or bag for life, simply won’t suffice.
Suzanne Hargreaves eloquently put it: “A dedicated baby-changing bag is essential because it’s specifically designed to accommodate all your baby essentials. With built-in features, such as a changing mattress and insulated bottle holders, these bags make organisation and accessibility effortless, ensuring you’re always prepared when you're out and about.”
The Breastfeeding Mentor, Danielle Facey, believes a baby changing bag goes even further than practicality, as it allows parents to be present. She added: “With everything you need in one place, you can focus on enjoying your time outside the house rather than worrying about what you might have forgotten.”
Existing parents expanding their brood may query whether they need to buy an entirely new baby changing bag for their next child. Charlotte Hoskins explained: “The shelf life of a baby changing bag can vary depending on several factors, including the material it’s made from, how often it’s used, and how well it’s cared for. On average, a well-made and properly cared-for diaper bag can last anywhere from two to five years - even longer. Whether you should buy a new baby changing bag for each new baby depends on the condition of your current bag, your evolving needs, your personal preference, and budget.”
What are the different types of changing bag?
Mothers are spoilt for choice when it comes to shopping a baby changing bag. From tote bags, rucksacks, cross-body designs, to buggy-mounted creations, a clutch or miniature design and multi-way baby changing bags. So how do you know the right one for you?
Hoskins explained: “Baby changing bags come in various styles. Choosing the right type of bag can make a significant difference in how easy, and comfortable, it is to manage all your baby essentials while out and about. Depending on your lifestyle and how you plan to use the bag, some types may be more suited for certain situations than others.”
Nurture with Lydia founder, Lydia Emmanuel-Desir, recommends a backpack for those who want to be hands-free when out with the kids, though tote bags are a stylish alternative you can use long after the baby stage. While Facey suggested a larger design for those who travel a lot, or a convertible design that can “adapt to different situations”.
What are the most important features to look for in a baby-changing bag?
All experts and mums we spoke to are aligned on the fact a baby changing bag must be spacious, sturdy and stylish. Above everything, a baby changing bag with numerous compartments, inside and out, are a non-negotiable to store food, bottles, as well as wet and dry clothes.
Facey explained: “The most essential features in a baby-changing bag are space and compartments. In the early days, you’ll likely be carrying four to six nappies at a time, plus wipes, nappy cream, a change of clothes for your baby, a muslin or burp cloth, and potentially bottles and formula. A well-designed bag with compartments makes everything easily accessible, helping you - and anyone supporting you - know exactly where everything is. It also ensures you can quickly see when you need to restock essentials.”
Stirling-Reed stressed the importance of pockets with zips, which first-time mum, Tamsin Holland, insisted was one pet peeve of her baby changing bag as the flap top constantly popped open so the contents would fall out.
“Like with any product, you should always think about the longevity of what you are buying,” Millie Poppins, Baby Care Expert & Digital Creator said. “A good investment means that you can use it for many years and future babies too whilst being environmentally conscious.”
It's worth considering the following functionality features in your quest for the perfect changing bag:
| Lightweight: | You're going to be carrying this bag around all day. While space is important, opting for something that is comfortable and lightweight is key. |
| Comfortable: | Considering you will be carrying the bag for a prolonged time, opt for a bag with an ergonomic handle, padded shoulder straps, or back panel, even an adjustable and multi-way strap to avoid any strain on your back. |
| Compartments: | A spacious bag with compartments is paramount. Opt for a roomy nappy bag with multiple pockets inside and outside to keep wet clothes separate from dry clothes, snacks away from toys. It is also helpful to have detachable compartments too, which you can store your nappies and wipes in and pull out when necessary. |
| Insulated bottle pockets: | At least one of said pockets should be thermo-insulated to keep your milk formula warm. Plus, they need to be able to fit your baby bottles. |
| Changing mat: | There's not much point in buying a baby changing bag without the changing mat. Sure, there are some good options that come sans mat if you have a solid reason not to buy one, but if you're a first time mum, ensure your baby changing bag comes with a foldable mat you can fit inside or attach outside the accessory. |
| Easy to clean: | A baby changing bag that can be machine washed is useful, or made from fabric that is easy to clean with a wipe, such as leather, nylon or polyester. If you can find a waterproof bag - even better to prevent rain soaking through to your clean baby clothes. |
| Buggy clips: | The best baby changing bags, in our opinion, come with detachable stroller clips to help you go hands-free when you're pushing a pram. |
| Multi-way: | Convertible baby changing bags are the gold standard for many mums. A bag with a top handle to carry, straps to wear as a rucksack, as well as long straps for a tote bag, makes it easy to carry. |
| Style: | Style may not be everything, but most mums preferred a unisex design their partner felt comfortable wearing too. |
