7 best T-shirt bras that are virtually undetectable
Featured in this article
The best t-shirt bras? Virtually undetectable — as in, my girlfriends only know the source of my favourite chest support because I've waxed lyrical about its fit, comfort and flattering shape. However, if I'm honest, it took me months (and multiple online orders) to find The One.
But to spare you the same lengthy process when trying to nail your lingerie collection, I've spent the last three months personally testing a host of bras to declare which are the very best — and yes, that includes wireless bras, sticky bras, backless bras, and push-up bras.
Back to the t-shirt bra, though — a work wardrobe staple, and the style you'll likely call on most. But what actually is a t-shirt bra? “A t-shirt bra has smooth, moulded cups that create a seamless look under clothes,” says Emily MacKay, Customer Experience Manager at Bravissimo. “They come in various shapes, both padded and non-padded options, to offer the best fit for a variety of shapes and sizes.”
“They create a beautifully round profile that appears seamless under clothing,” adds Suzanne Pentland, Fit Specialist at Wacoal. And if you're a fan of lace, never fear — floral options are available too. “Opt for flat lace fabric cups, because they sit flush against your breasts for minimal seam show through.”
Noted. And now, onto the very best. Read on for my top picks from the likes of Lounge, Boux Avenue, Skims and Bravissimo, all of which scored highly for comfort, fit and value. Plus, I've grilled industry experts for common FAQs, too — including how to measure your bra size at home.
And if you're seeking recommendations when it comes to thongs, supportive swimwear and loungewear, we've got those covered too.
Ahead, the t-shirt bras Glamour editors actually wear daily:
T-shirt bra FAQs, answered by experts:
“T-shirt bras are designed to disappear under tight clothing; they may have design features such as smooth, moulded cups that are usually lightly padded,” details Emily. “Standard bras can offer more variety in the fabric, seams and embroidery that can sometimes be visible through tight clothing. If you are unsure which style will be best suited for yourself, you can always have a chat with expert fitters who offer styling advice so you can find exactly what you’re looking for.”
“Yes! There are options for every shape,” adds Emily. “Moulded cups help to even out asymmetry and offer an upfront, rounded shape. Bravissimo's Niya Smoothing Bra is a great option for a t-shirt bra that has an optional racer back, which offers extra uplift and support. If you have more fullness towards the bottom of your boobs, the Ultimate Comfort Plunge Bra can be a great way to get an uplifted shape.”
“T-shirt bras are an excellent option for larger busts,” reassures Emily. “The most important factor is making sure you have the correct fit first, then you can choose from the t-shirt bra that works for you to make sure you have a smooth and natural look under your clothes.”
“When choosing the right t-shirt bra, firstly, you must ensure you are wearing the correct size,” says Suzanne. “The band should be fitting firmly straight across your back, sitting against your chest bone, and the wires should be sitting behind your breast tissue with all the tissue enclosed with no spillage.” Want to check you're wearing the right size, though? How I test the best t-shirt bras:
It really is as simple as wearing each bra multiple times and under various t-shirts (both oversized, graphic tees and classic white t-shirts) over the course of a month — and at various points in my cycle, considering this causes my chest to both swell and cease. For context, all styles were scored against the following criteria:
| Functionality | Did the bra stay put, provide some support and give me the desired shape? Did I have any issues in terms of slipping, twisting or irritation? Did it sit seamlessly under all styles of t-shirt? |
| Design | Is the bra aesthetic and comfortable? How many options do I have in terms of colour and pattern? And what was each bra made of — is the material sustainable and breathable? |
| Price point | Would I be willing to spend that much again? Is it good quality? |
| Delivery | How quickly did the bra arrive, and what were the associated costs? |
And, because we're all different in terms of our chest shape, size and desired support, I also asked my fellow Glamour editors to weigh in on which brands and cuts they love, which influenced the styles I tested for myself.
Unsurprisingly, only the chest supports that impressed made it into this edit. However, I also tried the following, which sadly didn't meet my standards:
- Organic Basics' Core Full Coverage Bra, WAS £43, NOW £25.80 — Loved the range of colours and eco-credentials, however I found it gaped at the top and felt a little bulky.
- Boux Avenue's Comfort Microfibre Plunge Bra, £22 — Great price point, but didn't sit flush against the body and came up really small.
In terms of what I'm currently testing, stay tuned for these reviews:
Why you can trust me:
I've been reviewing underwear, shapewear, activewear, and wellness products, including cotton underwear, sports bras, and period pants, for almost three years — that's one year at Women's Health and 18 months at Glamour. During that time, I've seen countless trends and advancements, as well as a boom in our options.
To ensure I am an authority on functional fashion, I regularly attend press launches and interview clothing designers and brand founders, asking for their insight and shopping tips.
I also personally review as many new releases as possible. Because I choose to wear a bra every day, you could say I've been reviewing options from Boux Avenue, Lounge, H&M and Marks & Spencer for years to see which supports my 34DD chest best. However, I've been actively reviewing and sharing my findings on the best t-shirt bras for the last three months.
