If you're in the business of commuting to an office, be that full-time or hybrid, you've probably Googled what the best work clothes for women are (on more than one occasion). Now it's spring – i.e. a tricky enough time of year to know what to wear anyway – searches have spiked more than ever.
Unless you have a strict uniform, figuring out what to wear to work for spring can quite quickly become the bane of your morning routine – gone are the days of WFH when all we had to worry about was which loungewear set we were shimmying into, 10 minutes before we had to log on.
Luckily, then, we have the spring/summer 2026 runways to lean on for inspiration, as workwear is one of the biggest trends we've spotted. Seriously.
Celine featured colourblock suits, Givenchy updated work outfits with modern silhouettes and ruffles, and Victoria Beckham went Savile Row with oversized/borrowed-from-the-boys tailoring.
Depending on your office's dress code (is it boardroom smart or does it lean towards the casual side?), basics like one of the best blazers, some wide-leg trousers, a crisp white shirt and some loafers will never go amiss. And of course, you'll need one of the best work bags/best laptop backpacks to boot.
Stick to relatively muted colours for these fundamental items – with black, grey, white and navy hues – as these will go with everything. Then you have the sartorial freedom to get creative and add brighter pops and patterns for the season elsewhere; like through your shirts, jewellery and other accessories. How to dress well for work as a female?
The answer to this is totally subjective. Office dress codes aside, it mainly boils down to personal taste. If you're in an environment where fashionable/trendy items are discouraged, stick to capsule wardrobe outfits like suits and midi or maxi dresses and skirts as well as separates that are good for layering and tick the functionality box. The general consensus is to always opt for something modest (i.e. a long sleeve midi dress/work dress or tailoring), too.
What is smart office wear for women?
It's the same as it is for men, really; anything from a two or three-piece suit or co-ord to a pencil skirt and blouse. Bold colours and prints usually aren't recommended, though, so stick to minimal colour palettes to be safe. Unfortunately, this also means you'll need to reserve your best jeans for the weekend.
What to wear with work trousers?
Anything from a white or striped shirt and oversized blazer to one of the best T-shirts, bodysuits, vests or blouses – depending, again, on your office's dress code. Where shoes are concerned, kitten heels or ballet flats tend to go best, or a pair of the best fashion trainers if you're wanting to dress the outfit down.
