You might be surprised to hear this, but a fashion writer's footwear collection is the thing that gets refreshed the most. Specifically our best fashion trainers. Running around the city – be it on-set shooting, commuting, or travelling to and fro Fashion Week shows and PR events – means that we need something equal parts comfy and on-trend. But it also means that they get a lot of wear.
So this season, it's not just the clothing in my spring capsule wardrobe and summer capsule wardrobe that needs a refresh; it's the sneakers too.
Of course, ballet pumps, loafers and even kitten heels remain on an editor's rotation for everyday wear throughout the year, but…all of those can pinch/rub and often require breaking in. When looking for the perfect thing to put on your feet – whether it's what shoes to wear with baggy jeans, or how to style a midi skirt – fashion trainers will always come out on top. They're pretty much the one thing you can take out the box and go.
Running shoes are probably the sneakers everyone buys most regularly for evident reasons (they take a pounding), but they're not exactly an exciting purchase, are they? (Unless you're buying said running shoes for a cute errands ‘fit. It’s called running errands for a reason, OK?) If you really want to treat yourself, a pair of women's fashion trainers is where it's at.

For 2026, it's looking to be all about the slimline trainer. Where chunky trainers/dad trainers have reigned supreme over recent years (and don't get it twisted, they're still an absolute staple), low-top sneakers are coming in hot thanks to Bottega Veneta, Isabel Marant, Chloé and Dries Van Noten.
According to the Lyst Index 2025, Adidas Taekwondo trainers came in at number two on the list of hottest products for the year, and coming third was another trainer brand, one that's already worn by Emily Ratajkowski and Dua Lipa – Puma Speedcat ballet flat, AKA a cross between trainers and ballet flats. What's not to love?

How we tested the best fashion trainers

For the past five years, it has literally been my job to be clued up on the latest in the world of fashion. I've not only attended all the press days, fashion shows and showrooms to see the latest drops, but I've been covering them all, too.
