7 best shapewear pieces to buy in 2026, tested by us and approved by experts

Deciding on the best shapewear for you is such a personal journey – even more so than lingerie. While your underwear certainly serves a purpose, shapewear one-ups it by having to perform in a certain way, too.
It's something you might rely on when you need coverage beneath sheer fabrics, or lean on in order to feel your best when wearing a specific outfit. So, it's fair to say that solutionwear remains a highly contentious topic.

I preface this article by stressing the following: you shouldn't want to invest in the best shapewear to change your body in any way. Nor so that you can squeeze into smaller clothing. Instead, shapewear – whether you're shopping for everyday pieces or something to provide special ocassion support – should be about enhancing what we have, and helping us feel more confident.
The societal pressures to look a certain way can do one, for want of a better phrase, because there are times throughout the year when the need for solutionwear is warranted. Read: when you want to create a smooth foundation beneath form-fitting ensembles.
Of course, like your perfect foundation or pair of running trainers, shapewear is subjective to its wearer, but what I've found helpful as a consumer myself is seeing it modelled on real bodies and reading honest reviews. Ahead, you'll find exactly that.
Why you can trust me:
I am a fashion journalist who has literally been paid to cover trends and review clothing for the past five years – so you can trust that I've seen the good, bad and ugly. I regularly attend press days, preview new collections, interview experts and attend events to ensure I'm clued up on the best new brands and creations to reach the market.
What I consider to be the best shapewear for me might not necessarily be the same for another woman. For context, I'm 6ft tall and a clothes size UK 12 (usually), so, for this guide, I made it a priority to spotlight a few other bestselling shapewear styles on my fellow Glamour colleagues who are of different heights, shapes and sizes. It's important to me to champion all women.
Collectively, we have made a conscious effort to try out as many of the shapewear styles you'll see featured in this guide as possible. Combining our own personal reviews with that of other customers – plus pros and cons and other specifications like cost, materials and sustainability – we've managed to narrow our selection down and provide you with 7 items we genuinely rate, plus eight other styles we've currently got on trial.
How did I test the best shapewear?
Wedding season and event season aren't so much seasons anymore (they're all-year-round). Poor for my bank account, but great for testing shapewear. When testing shapewear and solutionwear, I score against the following criteria:
- I first consider which category they fall into – and therefore how much use I'd get from them. (Shapewear encompasses corsets, shaping bras, tank tops, shapewear shorts, bodysuits and high-waisted underwear).
- Next, I consider the colour and size range. There needs to be choice in size for obvious reasons, and choice in colour to ensure shapewear either matches your skintone or doesn't show up under your outfit.
- The next scoring criteria are perhaps obvious. I consider comfort (on first wear and fifth – shapewear stretches over time, but shouldn't stretch to the point of being ineffective), as well as how effectively the piece smooths my silhouette and appears invisible under clothes.
- Lastly, I consider how well the piece washes and whether there are any additional features that made my life easier (think: adjustability or open gussets).
Every piece of shapewear in this edit has impressed me across all criteria. Overall, my favourite shapewear: SKIMS' Seamless Sculpt High-Waisted Above The Knee Shorts. Not only do these shorts iron everything out beneath 'fit – from the best wedding guest dresses to the best party dresses – they also lift and shape exactly where you want them to. I've worn them under a stretchy bodycon dress and silk slip dress recently and they were completely invisible. They didn't roll down, cause any chafing or bulges, or dig in and bunch up whatsoever. My favourite feature, albeit an odd one, was what the brand calls an ‘open gusset’ – because after a few drinks, let's face it, no one has the energy to act like a contortionist each time they go to the toilet.
Ahead, the very best shapewear for all of your styling needs.

When should you wear shapewear?
Again, we stress, there is no time when shapewear should be used. Your body is beautiful as it is, and without it. But shapewear can "be used when you want additional support," Silvia Azzali tells me. That is, most commonly, when attending a formal event – but another trend which is experiencing something of a renaissance is the sheer trend. When recreating that look, as cosigned by Tyla, Doja Cat and Dua Lipa, shapewear can be used as a base underneath satin shirts, lace skirts, sheer dresses and see-through tailored trousers.
In whatever way you're using shapewear, “it's always best to look for shapewear after you've decided on your outfit, rather than the other way round, as the type of underwear you'll need will depend on the style you plan on wearing,” Sylvia says. "For example, figure hugging dresses will be elevated by shapewear, while a low-cut neckline may require a specific style of the best bra or shaping body.
“Shapewear isn’t about hiding your body, it’s about supporting it,” adds Gabrielle Richards. “You might choose to wear it under a special-occasion dress for extra smoothing, under tailoring for a cleaner silhouette, or even day to day. The key is comfort and confidence. If it makes you feel good in what you’re wearing, that’s the right time to wear it.” Amen.
Should you size up or down in shapewear? How tight should shapewear fit?
“Always choose your true size,” says Gabrielle. “It’s a common misconception that sizing down gives a better result , in reality it can cause bulging, rolling and discomfort. Shapewear is engineered to smooth at your normal size. If you’re between sizes, check the brand’s specific size guide and consider the level of compression you prefer.”
Shapewear is not meant to restrict your movements or breathing, by the way, so make sure you can function in it normally before committing to the purchase. According to Silvia, it “should delicately sit and sculpt the curves of the silhouette whilst contouring, but above all, it should fit comfortably. Any item of shapewear should never cut into you, and fitted shapewear should be discreet under slim-fitting clothing and feel secure, not compromising on freedom of movement.”
What is the best shapewear for under a dress?
Gabrielle says: “For dresses, seamless shaping shorts tend to be the most versatile. They smooth through the tummy, hips and thighs without visible lines. If the dress is body-skimming, look for lightweight, breathable fabric with targeted compression. For occasionwear, mid to firm support can create a more sculpted finish.”
Do you wear normal knickers under shapewear?
“It depends on the style. With shaping shorts or briefs, you typically wouldn’t wear additional underwear underneath. With bodysuits, it’s entirely personal preference,” says Gabrielle. “Many modern designs are created to be worn on their own, with breathable and hygienic linings built in.” So in short, some designs actually permit you to go commando should you want to, but to prolong the life of it, you should wear your cotton underwear or a comfy thong.
What is the most comfortable shapewear for everyday wear?
“For everyday wear, comfort is everything. Look for light to medium compression in soft, stretchy fabrics that offer support without feeling restrictive. High-waisted shaping briefs or lightweight shorts are popular because they smooth discreetly under jeans, trousers and knitwear while still feeling wearable all day,” Gabrielle says.
The Glamour verdict: how to choose the best shapewear
To recap, the best shapewear for you – and the best shapewear that actually works – is not only comfortable but supportive, confidence-boosting, smoothing and supportive. Your shapewear should wash well, never be painful, and also work from a colour standpoint. To that note: be wary of different lighting depending on how sheer your outfit is – some styles work best with nude lingerie and some work best with white or ivory, so test different colourways in different settings. Look for shapewear which offers more than just a contouring bodysuit; those with integrated bras such as the Mat De Luxe silhouette from Wolford nod to this. Lastly, be aware that sizing across shapewear will differ between brands – as will compression. Think about what you want the shaping piece to do and go from there.
