From Rita Ora to Myha'la at the Oscars 2026, the naked dress is so back
Once seen as the epitome of bad taste, sheer fabrics and risqué dresses have, in recent years, become a key piece of some of this year's chicest celeb looks. Yes, really.
Just one glimpse of the Oscars red carpet proved that its going nowhere soon, with everyone from Rita Ora and Myha'la to Teyana Taylor and Cara Delevingne carrying the look through from the Academy Awards red carpet through to the Vanity Fair after party.
Wearing Tamara Ralph, you'd be forgiven for letting your attention be captivated by the feathered headwear, but it was Rita Ora's dress that we really loved.
Lola Kirke in Simone Rocha was another real sheer dress highlight from this 2026 Oscars, while Alison Brie looked beautiful in a similarly sheer black Yara Shoemaker gown.
It was Odessa A'zion who brought the trend into its next chapter at the BAFTAs earlier this year, as she wore a custom Dior gown in black lace, designed by Jonathan Anderson.
Playing with transparency and volume, Odessa's BAFTAs dress reimagined the naked trend in a totally unexpected way. While the double-layered lace reveals her body through a game of light and shade, the bold silhouette creates an antithesis to traditionally bodycon dresses.
Need further proof of the naked dress trend? May we introduce you to the latest Grammy Awards, which played host to a whole number of super sheer moments.
From Kehlani in couture Valdrin Sahiti to Chappell Roan in custom Mugler and the whole of Katseye in a line-up of looks from Ludovic de Saint Sernin, it seems that there's no doubt that sheer dresses will continue to be a major hit in 2026.
When done right like this, 'nearly-naked' looks strike that hard-to-reach sweet spot between being sartorially sensual and super chic without even a hint of awkwardness or discomfort for either the wearer or the observer. And – we think it's fair to say – these women all look very comfortable in their sheer gowns.
And don't think for a minute that the concept of a sheer dress should've been left behind in your early twenties, with the likes of Priyanka Chopra, Ashley Graham and even the Duchess of Cambridge having joined in in proving that they can be super high fashion, flattering, sophisticated and sexy… whatever the occasion.
Of course, practically every red carpet has played host to a nearly-naked dress over the years, thanks in large part to the sartorially savvy fans such as Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, Zendaya and Chrissy Teigen, while Naomi Campbell and Gigi Hadid have taken to many a Fashion Week runway to prove the power of sheer fabrics.
