7 best cotton pyjamas I've tested in the summer heat

The best cotton pyjamas: alongside silk pyjamas, one of the more luxe options when it comes to nightwear, and an essential if, like me, you run hot.
My boyfriend, historically, hasn't been allowed to touch me after 10pm unless he wants to prompt loud complaints about my core temperature. Turns out I just had the wrong pyjamas. Previously, picking pairs made from synthetic, non-breathable materials like polyester, it's no wonder I often endured broken sleep, waking up every few hours to move my leg out from under the covers. Now, as a girl who exclusively wears cotton pyjama sets, I can confirm that they solved most of my issues.
But which brand does it best? Thankfully for you, I've spent the last three months testing a host of super-soft cotton pyjama shirts and shorts — including breathable bridal pyjamas and luxury pyjamas crafted from organic materials — to see which I rated best. Why? To spare you countless sleepless nights — or evenings spent scrolling virtual aisles.
So, read on to discover the best brushed cotton pyjamas for women in 2026, including new-in, short sleeve styles and long pyjamas the likes of Calvin Klein, Marks & Spencer and The White Company. Plus, answers to common FAQs about women's pyjamas from a nightwear expert. And if you're on the hunt for a high-performing dressing gown, lingerie, or loungewear, I've got you covered here, too.

Cotton pyjamas FAQs, answered:
“When it comes to our sleepwear, comfort is everything, and cotton delivers it effortlessly,” says Helen, Chelsea Peers' Product Director. 'As a natural fibre, cotton is beautifully soft against the skin, making it an easy choice for winding down at the end of the day. It’s also naturally breathable and absorbent, helping to keep you feeling fresh and comfortable throughout the night."
“One of cotton’s biggest strengths is its versatility across seasons,” continues Helen. "The way it’s woven can completely transform how it feels to wear. Lightweight cottons offer an airy finish that’s perfect for summer lounging.
Taking of Chelsea Peers' pyjama offering specifically, she adds: “Our latest Siesta collection captures that warm-weather feel, with breathable cotton styles designed for laid-back days and lighter nights. Standout pieces, like the Siesta Tiger Print, are crafted from 100% organic cotton cheesecloth, giving them that relaxed, effortless texture that feels light, airy and beautifully breathable.”
“Cotton is also made to last,” details Helen. “Durable and easy to care for, it stands up well to regular washing without losing its softness and wearability, so your favourite sets stay in rotation for longer. It keeps that relaxed, comfortable feel, wear after wear.”

How I choose the best cotton pyjamas:
Considering I already have an extensive collection of pyjamas, I first consulted those — what cotton pairs (or mis-matching separates) do I reach for most? Which pair do I crave when they're sat in the wash basket and in desperate need of a refresh?
However, I've also spent the last three months reviewing as many pairs of pjs as possible — from full-length trouser sets to cotton cami and shorts combos.
For context, each pair (or the same but in a different colourway) was worn for a minimum of two sleeps and then scored against the following criteria:
| Functionality | Were the pyjamas comfortable to sleep in? Are they suitable for both lounging and snoozing? Are they size inclusive? |
| Design | Are the pyjamas aesthetic and comfortable? How many options do I have for colour and pattern? And what percentage of the material was cotton? Did they feel both breathable and cosy? |
| Price point | Are the cotton pyjamas good quality? Is the price for one item, or an entire set? Would I be willing to spend that much again? |
| Delivery | How quickly did the cotton pyjamas arrive, and what were the associated costs? How easy is the returns or exchange process? |
Unsurprisingly, only the cotton pyjamas that impressed made it into this edit. However, I also tried the following, which sadly didn't meet my standards:
- H&M's Cotton Pyjama Bottoms, £22.99 — Despite their 100% cotton makeup, I found these poplin cotton trousers to be a little too stiff to sleep in. Great for lounging (and for tall girls, considering they trailed on the floor for me), but not the highest-scoring in terms of comfort.

Why you can trust me:
I like to consider myself a nightwear expert, considering my personal pyjama collection exceeds 17 pairs. However, I've got professional credentials, too. While I started my journalism career as a writer for a tabloid agony aunt, I quickly pivoted to shopping and have now been a commerce writer for just over three years. In that time, I've found a passion for reviewing the functional — sleepwear, including both luxury pyjamas and silk pyjamas, menstrual health accessories like period pants, activewear and swimwear, whether that be long-sleeve swimsuits or swimwear for big busts.
But to ensure I'm an authority on high-performing fashion and wellness, my working week tends to include multiple press launches, scanning the latest journals, and chatting one-on-one with loungewear designers, gynaecologists, women's health experts, and brand founders to answer common shopping FAQs.
Personally, I fluctuate between a size 12 and 14, depending on where I am in my menstrual cycle. And while I tend to prefer a long-sleeve pyjama set, I branched out in the name of research.
