H&M x Anamika Khanna is live – here's everything you need to know
H&M x Anamika Khanna has gone live, after being unveiled as the latest in a long line of H&M collaborations a few weeks back. Hot on the heels of the Scandinavian high-street label’s sold-out collections with Rokh, Rabanne H&M, H&M Mugler, Isabel Marant, Balmain, Giambattista Valli, Simone Rocha and Iris Apfel, of course.
Having received a sneak peek of the new H&M collection at the brand’s London studio – and with launch day now upon us – we’re here to tell you everything you need to know. You heard it here first: these pieces are flying off the virtual shelves.
ICYMI, Indian designer Anamika Khanna launched her label back in 1998, and quickly became one of India’s most beloved couture designers. She was the first Indian fashion designer to appear on the Paris Fashion Week schedule, and is best known for blending traditional Indian craftsmanship with Western silhouettes and tailoring.
Now, working from a studio situated in Kolkata, Khanna has developed her eclectic flair, and you’ll often find womenswear and luxurious wedding attire adorned in hand-embroidered embellishments.
H&M has always prided itself in making luxury more accessible to the wider world through their exclusive capsules. Yet – following a much-celebrated collaboration with Indian couturier Sabyasachi Mukherjee in 2021 – this women's and menswear collection with Anamika Khanna only marks H&M’s second crossover with an Indian fashion designer.
“Anamika Khanna designs clothes to encourage the wearer to express themselves,” Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor at H&M. said. “The silhouettes are fluid and draped, often in a way that can be personalised. The prints are also intriguing. She integrates many fully printed looks, combining traditional colour elements with something more graphic.”
“I've always felt Indian fashion gets lost when interpreted by the rest of the world,” Anamika added. “Often, our fashion — in terms of the culture, the heritage of craft and textile embroideries — is regarded as costume or not wearable or modern enough. Things have changed a lot, and this collection with H&M allows me to take something Indian and make it global and contemporary.”
Given the internet’s obsession with statement jewellery, we’re expecting the coral-hued drop earrings to be among the first pieces in the collection to sell-out – while the mosaic trousers and Handkerchief Hem Shirt are set to be popular pieces which double up as pyjamas or loungewear good enough to wear out.
Other pieces include flowing skirts and saris, a beautiful, traditional-cut lungi skirt which makes for the perfect autumn wedding guest outfit, a sportswear-inspired two-piece suit, Christmas party-appropriate bags and fringed collars to elevate existing occassionwear ensembles.
