How to wear a brooch without looking like your great aunt

The brooch is undoubtedly the accessory of the year.

The brooch is back in a big, big way. Shiny jewels and molten chrome pieces are popping up on the lapels and collars of every celebrity and fashion insider. It makes sense, considering the popularity of maximalist jewellery lately. '80s-style costume jewellery is hot right now, if luxury brands like Yves Saint Laurent are to be believed.

The love for these sparkly adornments may also run a little bit deeper than simply what's trending. Vintage and antique pieces hold special worth in today's world, where the majority of what we wear and buy is mass-produced. And it doesn't stop with vintage brooches: the simple act of customising a garment with pins taps into this desire for the unique. This might explain the recent pop culture craze for all things customisable, from bag charms to stickers.

But how to wear a brooch? It's a great way to dress up any garment, from a shirt to a jumper, a hat to a bag, and even on the waistline of a skirt. It's really up to you: get creative and adorn your outfit however you see fit. However, if you need some inspo first, we've got you.

Let's go the classic route first. A brooch on the lapel of a suit jacket or blazer is a foolproof way to add a romantic touch to your outfit. You can opt for a matching full suit or a jacket with a statement skirt. At the moment, oversized blazers and jackets with strong shoulders are trending. As are loud prints – wearing a blazer doesn't mean looking boring!

A brooch belongs on a collar, so why not go for a supersized version? Blouses and dresses with oversized, Peter Pan-style collars are the perfect match for pretty brooches. Not only are you drawing attention to the statement part of the outfit, but you're also filling up all that extra space! Have fun with it and don't be afraid of clashing colours or prints. If you're nervous, you can never go wrong with silver or gold.

With a trench coat

Trench coats definitely take the crown for outerwear of the season, beloved for both their practicality and sophistication. Combine two trends by accessorising your trench with a brooch. Pearls and jewels, with their ornamental beauty, will elevate the utilitarian simplicity of the coat. The result is a look with visual tension, mixing hard and soft.

On a leather jacket

Speaking of mixing hard and soft visual cues, here's another combination you might like. Opt for a dark leather jacket in shades like chocolate brown or oxblood. A leather that appears worn or faded will enhance the element of toughness. Adding a brooch to this ensemble is a great way to mix it up. Bonus points if the brooch is shaped like a flower.

If you're not sure where to put your brooch, how about your hat? It will work on pretty much any type of headwear, whether you're into berets, caps or even headbands. A perfect method to give new life to an old hat, or to add more sparkle to your statement piece.

On a knitted jumper

A well-placed brooch (or two!) will transform an old jumper or cardigan into a new piece. You can even swap them out depending on the vibe of the outfit. If you're worried about pulling your knitwear, buy some brooch sponges. These can be secured behind the fabric, giving the weight of the brooch more support to avoid sagging.

With a shawl

If you want a slightly more dramatic look, use your brooch to fasten a shawl (or even a stole, if you're fancy!) Add it to a romantic summer dress to protect you from the evening chill. Or, if you really want to look like you've been rooting around in your great aunt's wardrobe – it's a look, honestly – get your hands on a vintage or faux fur stole.

On a cape

If you really want to lean into the drama, get yourself a cape. They have been everywhere this year. If you don't want to go full Phantom of the Opera, trench coats with little capes are also a massive trend. Short or long, every cape packs a punch and completely transforms any outfit you've got on below. Even jeans and a shirt will look instantly elevated.

The only thing more fun than a brooch is lots of them. Try it on an old blazer, skirt, bag, T-shirt, or any piece of clothing you want to add some bling to. A simple, boring piece can be turned into a statement with some creativity and a bit of time. You can buy brooches that come in multipacks, or, if you want a truly unique garment, build up your own collection from charity shops and small businesses.
