Denim trends come and go, but it’s safe to say mom jeans hit staple status a few years back. And while we’ve been distracted by slouchy low-rise styles, sweeping wide-legs, and the much-debated comeback of skinny jeans in recent months, we’ll always keep coming back to this timeless, wear-anywhere style.

While their roots trace back to the late ’80s and early ’90s, it’s only in more recent years that this relaxed silhouette has secured its place as the mother of all jeans for women. The best pairs typically feature a tapered leg, roomy thigh, and high waistline – which is ultra-flattering for all body shapes.

Unsurprisingly then, mom jeans have been cosigned one of the best style of jeans for women by Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Dakota Johnson. The timeless style reigns supreme even when new styles emerge. Think: balloon leg or carrot-cut jeans. Consider them a happy medium between the barrel-leg jean, straight-leg and skinny jean.

A quick flick through your family album and you will most likely see your parents, aunts, cousins and other relatives wearing the baggy jeans with a white T-shirt, or a jewel-toned cropped blazer fitted with shoulder pads and embellishment. But how should you style mom jeans now? Funnily enough, it isn't too far off how our predecessors wore them.

For casual days, team your mom jeans with a boxy fit crew neck tee layered under a knitted jumper and trainers. Alternatively, mom jeans complement a fitted top, such as a one-shoulder top, bodysuit, a waistcoat, a lace cami top, or an oversize blazer with a pair of slingback kitten heels.

Whether you take style inspiration from Cindy Crawford in the 90s, Elsa Hosk or Gigi Hadid's contemporary take on the denim style, maybe the runway looks at Ganni and Moschino, we have whittled down some of our favourite ways to style Mom jeans and the best denims to buy.

Ahead, our editors' take on how to style mom jeans.

LOOK 1: Ankle Grazer Mom Jeans, Tank Top And Loafers

Ankle-grazer mom jeans are a personal favourite of mine because they allow your shoe game to shine. The loose fit and mid-length silhouette can be paired with any basic top, a blazer and high heels, pointed-toe boots, as well as trainers, ballet flats, flat sandals or loafers. TBH, the latter is my personal favourite to wear in the summer months and transitional seasons when I want to shield my toes from the wind and rain.

If you ever needed justification to invest in a pair of mom jeans, this formula, which will take you from autumn/winter to spring/summer, is the convincing you needed.

Turn up jeans, ICYMI, are a trending style for spring 2026, and are the ideal choice if you are after a relaxed, easygoing pair for casual days. A turn-up mom jean is the ideal option for those looking for a relaxed pair of denim jeans to wear for casual occasions, such as winter walks or weekends perusing the shops. While it works perfectly with a pair of trainers for off-duty dressing, some prefer to jazz it up with a pair of pointed-toe boots that you can tuck the jeans into or leave out.

To continue the relaxed look further, team with an oversize bomber-style suede jacket, get playful with a fringe suede design, or opt for a straight suede jacket to contrast the baggy fit of the bottoms.

While we strongly recommend shopping for a pair of blue denim mom jeans, we also urge you to invest in a pair of black jeans that will go with anything. (More on what to wear with black jeans here).

We don't know what sorcery is behind a dark-wash denim, but it is deemed more appropriate for most offices. With that in mind, it's only right that you team with a crisp white cotton shirt, court shoes – inspired by the iconic Chanel Slingbacks – and a timeless trench coat.

Arguably, the easiest outfit to take your everyday mom jeans from day to night. Simply pairing your casual denim with a pair of on-trend slingback shoes, and an edgy oversized leather jacket, instantly gives your ensemble that air of effortless chic. In other words, it's giving ‘I just threw this on’ when you actually spent hours mulling over what to wear. While this look complements any style of mom jean, including the wash, length and cut, the slim fit is often preferred in the evening for a flattering finish.

LOOK 5: Full Leg Mom Jeans, Checked Shirt And Western Boots

This look is a nod to numerous trends right now, including the Western aesthetic – with the cowboy boots and plaid shirt (a staple which is also experiencing something of a resurgence thanks to Gen Z tying the humble checked flannel shirt around their waists). Elsewhere, the full leg length is a nod to the straight 90s style we have also seen return to the fashion scene, thanks to Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner.

While you can wear your full leg mom jeans with a T-shirt, long sleeve, Henley top or tank top and tie the shirt around your waist, you can also wear the shirt unbuttoned, or partially fastened for added warmth and coverage. If you feel the cold, simple layer with a suede jacket, bomber design, a blazer, or oversize biker jacket.

If there’s one outfit formula that never fails to strike the perfect high-low balance, it’s blue mom jeans teamed with an oversized blazer and a flash of pink heels. The slouchy tailoring of the blazer adds that ‘borrowed from the boys’ look fashion editors swear by, then comes a playful pop of pink from the heels that instantly lifts the entire look, taking it from daytime casual to dinner-ready in seconds.

This time, the nostalgic influence is reflected at the waist, with a low-rise waist that takes us back to the nineties and noughties. Pair this style of mom jeans with ballet flats, which have had a revival, as well as a basic tank top, and you have a versatile base you can adapt for any season.

This ensemble couldn’t be more effortless to wear any day of the week, whether it's to the office with a blazer or out for coffee with friends with a jumper draped over your shoulders. Safe to say this catwalk look from Ganni reaffirms the power of mom jeans on and off the runway.
