If you have Disney+, you're probably watching WandaVision. It's kinda a big deal, being Marvel's first TV series on the streaming platform.

The American miniseries is based on the Marvel Comics characters Wanda Maximoff, Scarlet Witch and Vision, plus its set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and picks up after where 2019's Avengers: Endgame ends so it's consistent with other Marvel creations.

But, you'll be surprised to hear all the other cultural influences - outside of the MCU - that the new series is based on. From The Twilight Zone to Modern Family, these are the surprising shows.

The Twilight Zone is your classic horror series, in which there's a narrator guiding the viewer through a mix of creepy stories.

Think of it like a short story book.

The show was remade by Jordan Peele and it seems to have stayed with Jac Schaeffer, creator of WandaVision.

Speaking to Collider, he revealed its influence on him and the making of the new series: "'The Twilight Zone' is an enormous influence on me, personally.

"I really think that's actually how I learned to tell stories. It was so incredibly deft at that turn, where you think you're in one thing, and then suddenly it's flipped on its head. We were all incredibly enamored of that."

The Dick Van Dyke Show

Even if you haven't seen it, you've probably heard of it. The Dick Van Dyke Show is a comedy cult classic that followed a writer and his wife, both in the public and domestic spheres of their life.

It was clearly a big inspiration for WandaVision as director Matt Shakman met with Dick Van Dyke purely to quiz him on the ins and outs of his show.

Matt said to ET: "We learned from Dick Van Dyke that their number one rule for how they approached anything was that if it couldn't happen in real life, it can't happen on the show."

He added this influenced how he approached his own show.

Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Wanda, said their first episode was "a big love song to 'The Dick Van Dyke Show.' We tried to film it as authentic to that time period as possible."

I Love Lucy

I Love Lucy also influenced the first episode of WandaVision.

The show follows Lucy, a housewife looking to make it as a performer in the New York show business scene.

Elizabeth was inspired by the role and the "physical comedy", as she told Collider.

You can also see influences in episode two of WandaVision, as I Love Lucy became famous for the image of Lucy and her husband being sat in twin beds (a common feature of shows at the time due to what was considered appropriate to screen) and we see this image reimagined in WandaVision.

Bewitched

Bewitched is one of the most famous witch sitcoms out there, following a witch who marries a 'normal' man trying to have a 'normal' life.

Remakes have seen the likes of Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell take on the prized roles, but Elizabeth told Collider she used the OG witch actress Elizabeth Montgomery as an inspiration with her own acting as Wanda.

I Dream of Jeannie

I Dream of Jeannie influenced WandaVision and you can see in the second episode.

It's a series about a genie who falls for her owner. The genie is 2,000 years old and the genie is an astronaut - so it's an unlikely match.

In WandaVision, Vision accidentally swallows gum and malfunctions, which is said to have been inspired by this 1960s sitcom.

The Brady Bunch

Many sitcoms of the past haven't aged well, but The Brady Bunch resonated with WandaVision's director.

Matt told Collider of the show about a blended family: "There are so many legendary sitcoms throughout time, but 'Taxi' doesn't really relate to this show where 'The Brady Bunch' does.

"There are key reference points that were about this idea of family, and oftentimes, that does age pretty well."

Good Times

Good Times ran for six seasons and is set in a Chicago housing project, where a struggling family try to get by with all their very different personalities on show.

Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica Rambeau, said Good Times was a "point of reference" to The Wrap, though its specific influences haven't been revealed.

She added: "It's like a clash of lots of elements and characters, and you're like, how does this fit? Does that fit? It's kind of off … I guess it's meant to be off."

The Mary Tyler Moore Show

Just as Elizabeth told Collider she used Elizabeth Montgomery of Bewitched as an inspiration, in the same breath she cited Mary Tyler Moor.

She said she used "an amalgamation of Mary Tyler Moore and Elizabeth Montgomery" to channel her performance.

Full House

Full House didn't influence WandaVision in the same way the other shows mentioned so far have, but creator Jac told Emmy Magazine that Full House was a part of "the fabric of what we're doing."

Elizabeth's older sisters, the ultra teen-cool Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, starred in Full House which Elizabeth told EW made her own Wanda experience feel quite "meta".

Malcolm In The Middle

Malcolm in The Middle20th Television

This famous sitcom follows a working-class family and Malcolm, who has unmatched intelligence for his young age.

In the sixth episode in WandaVision, the opening credits are strikingly alike the opening credits of Malcolm in the Middle.

There's also breaking of the forth wall seen with some of the characters, and that performance device is seen in the older sitcom.

It's an interesting technique that means the character addresses the viewers through the camera directly.

It shows awareness of being watched, though usually other characters can't sense the audience.

Modern Family

Modern Family is one of the newer shows on this list and it follows three households who are all family but live very different lives in a mockumentary format.

In episode seven of WandaVision, Wanda breaks the fourth wall again.

Modern Family does this and it's one way the show's influence can be seen.

Out Of This World

This show isn't as famous as some of the other influences, though Matt did speak about it in an interview.

Out of This World is about a girl who is half-alien and has superpowers.

Schaeffer told Uproxx: "She's holding cards or something, and she suddenly drops them and then puts her hands together, and it's really weird and creepy.

"And that was a big influence on me, with the rupture of the sitcom tone."

Other fans have theorised that The Partridge Family and The Courtship of Eddie’s Father also influenced the style and feel of WandaVision.
