Millennials are sometimes accused of refusing to let go of the past — and a quick look at the film and TV industry would seem to confirm that those accusations aren't entirely unfounded. We are currently in the midst of the era of the sequel. Practically every movie or show we loved as kids has made an unexpected return over the past few years: Freaky Friday, Practical Magic, The Devil Wears Prada, Sex and the City, Beetlejuice, Legally Blonde, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Bridget Jones… I could go on. Is this a tired trend? Or a welcome excuse to dive headfirst into some welcome nostalgia? Either way, the pattern doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon — because, yes, another reboot of a Y2K classic has just been announced… and it's a good one.
A Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is (almost definitely) coming our way. More good news: Sarah Michelle Gellar, aka Buffy Summers herself, is in “final talks” to join the cast, while renowned Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao will reportedly lead the project.
The show, created by Joss Whedon, followed Gellar's Buffy Summers, a high school girl from Sunnydale who is selected as a “Slayer" and tasked with fighting vampires and other supernatural forces alongside her “Scooby Gang.” Back at the turn of the millennium, Buffy was — well — a massive deal. It ran for seven seasons on The CW and was followed by the spin-off Angel. Its stars filled the pages of teen magazines. Young viewers obsessed over the show online in the early days of internet fandom. As we said: big deal.
A full moon is rising…

As reported by Variety, the show is nearing a pilot order at Hulu — in other words, we are super close to an official announcement that, yes, it's happening. Gellar is in the final stages of talks to join the reboot, while Zhao, a longtime Buffy fan, is attached to direct and executive produce. Sisters Nora and Lila Zuckerman (Poker Face, The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) are also attached to write, showrun, and executive produce.
Whedon, the original creator of the show is not amongst the production team. This follows 2021 reports from people involved in the original series that he “abused his power on numerous occasions” and created a “toxic environment.”
What will the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot be about?
We don't know for sure when or where the reboot will be set — but if Gellar is returning to the role, it's safe to say the show will pick up a few decades after the events of the first series. According to Deadline, it will be "the next chapter in the Buffyverse."
Who will star in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot?
So far, Gellar is the only original cast member who has been cited. However, it is “likely” that others will join her.
That might include the likes of Alyson Hannigan as Buffy's friend and witch Willow, Michelle Trachtenberg as Buffy's sister Dawn, Nicholas Brendon as their friend Xander, Anthony Head as Buffy's mentor Giles, David Boreanaz as vampire Angel, and James Marsters as vampire Spike.
Clear your calendars for February 2025.

When can we watch the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot?
If the show does end up happening, it seems like it will be heading to Hulu — however, we will have to be fairly patient, as the show still hasn't officially been commissioned.
