The long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel (aptly named Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) is officially here — and it's just as wacky and wild and spooky as we could have hoped.
In the first film, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis played newlyweds who discovered that they had actually died and become ghosts. When a new and very annoying family (the Deetz's) moved into their home, they sought out the help of the very strange ghost Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to scare the family away.
Now, the Deetz's have come back to Winter River — and they've brought along a new member of the family, the teenage Astrid (played by the ever-spooky Jenna Ortega). Although Baldwin and Davis aren't returning in this film, Keaton reprises his role as the wild, stripy titular ghost, while Catherine O'Hara and Winona Ryder are also back as members of the Deetz family. Plus, there's an impressive new cast filled with plenty of familiar faces.
Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Michael Keaton returns as the titular mischievous spirit, Beetlejuice — after all, it wouldn't really be Beetlejuice without him, would it?
Where you've seen them before: In the ‘80s and early ’90s, Keaton was best known as Batman. He also took home an Oscar for the unforgettable Birdman, which was released in 2014, and starred in Spotlight the following year.
Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Winona is also returning to the Beetlejuice universe as Lydia. In the first film, she was a bratty teen — now, she's a celebrity TV psychic who has a strained relationship with her own teenage daughter, Astrid.
Where you've seen them before: Winona Ryder was something of an It-girl in the '80s and ‘90s, starring in Heathers, Edward Scissorhands, Dracula, The Age of Innocence, Little Women and Girl, Interrupted. More recently, she’s been busy starring as Joyce in Stranger Things.
Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Catherine O'Hara reprises her role as the grating Delia Deetz. In the first film, she arrived at Winter River where new ghosts Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis tried to scare her and her family away. In this film, she's back with her daughter and her granddaugter.
Where you've seen them before: A comedy legend, O'Hara has appeared in Best in Show, Home Alone and Frankenweenie. More recently, you probably fell in love with her as Moira Rose in Schitt's Creek.
Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Jenna joins the cast as the youngest addition to the Deetz family. As Lydia's daughter, she rebels against her mother by not believing in ghosts — naturally, she's in for a shock at Winter River.
Where you've seen them before: Jenna Ortega found fame in season 2 of You before starring in Netflix's Wednesday.
So gothic romantic.
Willem Defoe as Wolf Jackson
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Willem's Wolf is an “afterlife cop”, an undead guy with a part of his skull missing, by the looks. When he was alive, Wolf Jackson was an actor known for playing a police officer, and took on a similar role after he died as head of the Afterlife Crimes Unit.
Where you've seen them before: Where haven't you seen him? Most recently, Willem has starred in Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, both directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone.
Justin Theroux as Rory
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Rory is Lydia Deetz's fiancé and manages “Ghost House with Lydia Deetz”, Lydia's TV show. Reports say that that Rory is set to replace the role of Otho from 1988's Beetlejuice, after the actor who played Otho – Glenn Shadix – passed away in 2010.
Where you've seen them before: He's worked in front of and behind the camera on films like American Psycho and Mulholland Drive, was married to Jennifer Aniston and his brother is Louis Theroux.
Monica Belluci as Delores
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: She will play “obsessive, revenge-seeking” Delores, who is also Beetlejuice's bride and has a mysterious new purpose in the afterlife. She's said to be a possible favourite when it comes to the new additions to the Beetlejuice cast, so watch this space.
Where you've seen them before: You may recognise her from The Apartment, as well as the Matrix movies, or maybe even James Bond movie Spectre.
Arthur Conti as Jeremy
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Jeremy is a young fan of Lydia Deetz, believing her to be “a legend thanks to her supernatural show”.
Where you've seen them before: He appeared in Game of Thrones spin-off series House of the Dragon as Queen's Page.
Santiago Cabrera as Richard
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Santiago will play Richard, which the actor has described himself as a “small role”, but that doesn't mean he isn't excited. “Just to be a part of Tim Burton’s world and in his playground — and meet him and play with him, and see how the whole thing is done — was incredible,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
Where you've seen them before: He's a classically trained Chilean actor, having appeared in TV series such as Heroes and Merlin.
Burn Gorman as Father Damien
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Father Damien is a reverend living in the town of Winter River. We don't know much else about his role, but he did make a brief appearance in the movie's trailer.
Where you've seen them before: Burn has appeared in The Dark Knight Rises, Pacific Rim: Uprising, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes.
Danny DeVito as Janitor
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Danny will play a cameo role as a dead janitor, undoubtedly at least partially due to his long-term friendship with Tim Burton.
Where you've seen them before: Everywhere! He's an on-screen institution. Top DeVito appearances include Matilda and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
Amy Nuttall as Jane Butterfield
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: The character of Jane is suspected to be the daughter of Jane in the original Beetlejuice movie, played by Annie McEnroe.
Where you've seen them before: Amy has appeared in British TV classics such as Emmerdale, New Tricks and Downton Abbey.
Sami Slimane as Le Tigre
Who they play in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: The role of Le Tigre remains a mystery, as of yet.
Where you've seen them before: Sami appeared in Netflix's 2022 psychological thriller Athena.
