How to style stirrup leggings, the runway-approved trouser trend

Still don't believe that comfortable and chic cannot coexist in an outfit? Let us introduce you to stirrup leggings. You likely remember them being popular in the ’80s and ’90s, when lycra was all anyone would wear, but now you've probably noticed their retro presence on the ‘new-in’ sections of your favourite online stores. If you've never given them much thought until now, let this be the sign you were looking for: they come designer-approved.
Mugler, Balmain, Saint Laurent and Tibi (to name a few) have all given stirrup leggings the thumbs up; they've come a long way from the equestrian uniforms they were once intended for. That said, this isn't their first rodeo since the late 20th-century.
Jacquemus featured a rib-knit knee-high pair during the 2020 autumn/winter fashion week show, then Isabel Marant presented a classic black pair at her spring/summer 2021 showcase. And they've stuck around since. This year we saw them on the Balmain runway complete with a structured coat and statement earrings, proving there needn't be anything casual about the humble legging.
So what's the reason for their consistent comebacks? Plain black leggings, gym leggings and wet look/leather look leggings all have their pros when it comes to returning fashion trends, but stirrup leggings offer an effortless-yet-elevated take that the others can't quite match. The secret to their success? Not only do they offer a streamlined, elongating effect, but they keep you warm – hence so many base layers for skiwear feature ankle straps – and prevent ride-up throughout the day. It's the legging doing the most.
As for how to style them? Dismiss any preconceptions you have about stirrup leggings being a ‘horse girl’ thing. Although we're here for an equestrian trend. Celebrities and the street style set have confirmed this stable staple should be in everyone's wardrobe. Kendall Jenner was spotted this month dressing them up with a fur-trimmed jacket and heels. The comfiest party outfit we could imagine TBH. The practical wardrobe staple is one our VB (that is, Victoria Beckham) has been seen in for years, wearing with everything from blazers and t-shirts to knitwear and trench coats. If Posh Spice says even the practical has a place in her wardrobe, and looks good doing it, then we're listening.
There's no right or wrong when it comes to styling this trusty trend. In fact you'll find them surprisingly versatile. The go-to is, of course, to don them for an off-duty look. Add your favourite pair of trainers and your winter puffer coat and you're ready to do the big shop, but make it fashion. That's not all they're good for. Show off the stirrup (duh) with a pair of pointed heels (à la VB) or loafers and take note from Instagram's royalty for the rest. If in doubt think; all-black-everything for an elevated ‘fit that’s influencer-approved.
Read on to see three of our favourite outfit formulas to style stirrup leggings this season.
Look 1: With a faux fur coat
Trust us, leggings are not to be saved for your sweatshirts–although we can't deny that's a loungewear lewk. Dress up your stirrup leggings with a turtleneck layered under an oversized coat and some pointed court shoes for day-to-night dressing. Bonus points if you complement your 'fit with a red lip and a micro handbag. It-girl vibes.
Look 2: With a puffer
What stirrup leggings do so well? Elevating your laidback Sunday look. We're talking your favourite vintage cap, a puffer coat and your trainers to build an errands outfit you'll actually feel put together in. If you're leaning into the athleisure style, look to Adidas to for a fashion-forward pick. All you need is an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink tote bag and you're ready. Cosy but chic winter outfits? Sorted.
Look 3: With a denim shirt
If you want to wear your stirrup leggings for everyday, we've got you covered. Whether you're pairing your favourite high-street leggings (we have our eye on this M&S pair) with a blazer for the office or something more casual like a failsafe denim shirt, a loafer is your best bet at polishing the look.
