Not only are they a nightmare should you dare to order red wine or any form of remotely saucy supper (as in au jus, not a risqué carbonara), but white jeans also hang so delicately in the balance between chic and cliché that it's often seen as something safer to steer clear from.

There is also something that feels vulnerable about donning such a stark shade. White cotton dresses or white t-shirts are way easier to incorporate into an outfit - but this season a variety of new silhouettes and cuts will make it easier to try the white jean trend and make your outfits look instantly summer-ready.

Unlike the many other classic shades of denim - we're talking acid wash, rinse wash, mid wash, indigo, bleach wash, grey, black jeans... etc. - the white jean isn't as effortlessly interchangeable as its siblings. While you may be able to wear the same pair of your favourite sandals with any of the aforementioned washes, the white jean tends to call for entirely different set of pieces in order to elevate and flatter them.

Skinny jeans will also feel like a bolder choice in white. If it's your first foray towards the light side, look to a slouchier cut, which will be an easier baby step to take.

Avoid too much gold jewellery, bright tropical prints and ruffles when you're wearing white jeans. They can make your outfit a little too lairy - unless that's your thing, no shade here.

Instead, a great way to wear your white jeans is with full-neutrality in mind. I.e. with a cream top, a pale biscuit blazer, and an oatmeal bag and shoe. Keeping things minimal is a great way to ensure a blend of tones throughout the look, allowing the jean to feel less severe. You also can't go wrong with teaming your jeans with a Breton top and a pair of white trainers for a perpetually chic nautical mood.
