How we test the best mushroom supplements:

Since 2021, the GLAMOUR team — writers, editors and committed freelancers — has made it a priority to personally test a host of supplements, multivitamins and protein powders to boost your diet and overall well-being. To test the best mushroom supplements, we scored each on the following criteria:

  • Ease of use — Were the capsules easy to swallow? Did the coffee mix well with hot water? Did the gummies taste ok?
  • Efficacy — What amount of mushroom do they provide per serving, and what is its potency?
  • Taste and ease of use — On a scale of one to five, how pleasurable was the taste, or how easy was the capsule to swallow?
  • Value for money — Would they be happy to commit to the weekly, monthly or bi-monthly spend?

For those we haven't personally reviewed (yet), we paid close attention to the list of ingredients, online reviews, and consulted with industry experts on whether they'd recommend them.

Mushroom supplement FAQs, answered:

What are the benefits of mushroom supplements?

"Generally, mushrooms help your body respond more efficiently to stress and restore balance, but each functional mushroom can bring unique properties and help with different things,” explains Zafar. There are also a range of different mushrooms with various benefits: “For example, adaptogenic mushrooms can help with stress,” continues Zafar. “It works to balance cortisol levels and help you respond to it more effectively. Cordyceps falls into this category, and when used correctly, it can be a valuable tool against fatigue and low energy.”

Lion’s mane is known for its neuroprotective potential, which means it can increase focus. It has been shown to improve memory and recall in adults with mild cognitive impairment," he adds. In one 2009 study, people taking Lion’s Mane scored significantly higher on cognitive function scales after 16 weeks.

“Chaga mushroom is a powerful antioxidant that works to support your immune system, reduce inflammation, and lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels,” Zafar details. "Mushrooms like Reishi and Turkey tail have beta-glucans that stimulate your immune cells. Turkey tail can also support your gut, while Reishi can also reduce stress and improve sleep."

What to look for in mushroom supplements?

Zafar advises looking for supplements made from the fruiting body — AKA the visible part of the mushroom — rather than the root-like mycelium: “This is where the highest levels of beneficial compounds like beta-glucans are found. Also, look for organic mushrooms as they're higher quality standards.”

How should you take mushroom supplements?

While there are a few different ways to take mushrooms such as gummies, coffees and drinks, Zafar says that capsules are the easiest and most consistent way to take mushroom supplements “as they are tasteless, convenient, and the dosing can be standardised."
