Best gifts for mums FAQs, answered:

What kinds of gifts do mums usually love?

To be honest, anything that shows you've thought of them — even if that's a fresh of their favourite biscuits. However, I urge you to splurge, because it's one of few days a year where you can really thank her for all she does.

Popular options include personalised gifts, such as engraved jewellery or a photo frame housing her favourite family photo, and practical items she'll call on repeatedly: a cosy dressing gown, quality kitchenware and travel accessories ahead of her upcoming retirement adventures.

Experience gifts are often praised for giving you the chance to make new memories together, as are gifts that show you've taken her interests and hobbies into account, such as crafting kits, the latest release from her favourite author or high-spec gardening tools.

How to choose a thoughtful gift for your mum:

I typically start by asking myself the following questions:

  • What has she bneen talking about, lusting over or wishing for?
  • What are her hobbies and interests?
  • Is there something she wouldn’t buy herself?

Otherwise, abiding by the Five Gift Rule is often a safe bet. This involves gifting five smaller presents, but one from each of the following categories: something they want, something they need, something to wear, something to read, and a special gift that holds personal significance.

How I choose the best gifts for mums:

I, Sophie Donovan, with the help of my fellow shopping editors – Sophie Cockett, Shani Cohen, Georgia Trodd and Mayola Fernandes – oversee this edit, alongside every other gift guide on the Glamour website to ensure that seeking our unique gifts is stress-free, whether you're hunting for Mother's Day gifts, Valentine's Day or birthday presents.

I regularly attend press days and product launches to test, try and review the latest in fashion, beauty and lifestyle to ensure you only buy gifts that are worth your money. But what exactly do I consider when I get my hands on a sample?

DesignIs it practical, fit for purpose and not at all frumpy?
Price pointWould we be willing to spend that much?
DeliveryHow quickly did it arrive, and what were the associated costs?
GiftabilityIs this something the recipient actually wants, needs and would enjoy?

Why you can trust me:

It's been my job to review new launches and brand bestsellers for the last two years — that's 17 months at Glamour and a year elsewhere — meaning I've tested everything from sexual wellness launches to running trainers, menstrual products (AKA period pants) and have reviewed literally thousands of gifts.

But to ensure I'm an expert in these areas, I regularly attend press days and quiz experts, including sex therapists, activewear designers and shopping pros. As a result, you could say I am more of an expert on the subject of wellness, shopping and gift-giving than your average online shopper.

In fact, I was recently asked to share my tips live on Radio 4, where I suggested we collectively skip a restock of socks in exchange for a DIY gift hamper or bucket list experience gift.
