Anne-Marie on her pink hair how-to, colourful eye makeup hacks and why we all need to go on a journey of self-love
We know and love Anne-Marie for belting out some of our all time favourite tunes from '2002' to 'Don't Play', but we also love that she unashamedly speaks her mind, sharing searingly honest accounts of her own personal mental health journey. The former GLAMOUR UK cover star and Mind Charity ambassador has opened up on her anxiety as a teen, her experiences of bullying and shared the benefits of going through therapy. She has even named her upcoming second album 'Therapy', which we'll be downloading from 23rd July.
The 3 x former world karate champion is also in the know when it comes to beauty, from dyeing her own hair pink to quick brow filling hacks. Here in her self-filmed episode of GLAMOUR's Beauty Spy, she shares her fast route to a pop of colour on the eyes, her favourite wellness ritual (yep it's growing her own veg) and why she'd encourage us all to go on a journey of self love.
My biggest beauty indulgence has to be a laser hair removal
"And it's the best decision I've ever made! Shaving really annoys me. I just find it so inappropriate. I'll notice I've got hairy legs when I go to wear a dress for something and it's just annoying and quite time-consuming to shave. It might not be for some people, but for me, yes. And deciding to get it all off and never get it back again, is a brilliant decision I've made."
I was a karate kid
"So, I've been doing karate since I was nine years old, and I love it so much for loads of reasons. Mainly as when I was younger, it took my mind off of other things. I was quite naughty as a child and couldn't hold my attention. I still can't really hold my attention on things for too long, but it was one thing that I could really focus on. And I learnt a lot about discipline. It also kept me fit and it let me get my anger out."
This is what I smell like...
I rarely wear perfume really, but, if I do, it is this - La Vie Est Belle [Lancome]. I used to walk past this smell, when I was younger and worked at Ted Baker and it just caught my nose every time. And since then, I haven't really bought any other scent. So, this is what I smell like, if you ever wanted to know.
There’s nothing quite like growing your own
"My favourite wellness rituals include growing my own vegetables! And that is an accomplishment. When you get your first vegetable, or fruit, you feel so good, but then also you can eat it. And you feel like it's really fresh, and hasn't got any crap on it. So, that is one of my favourite things to do. Also I collect crystals, try to meditate and do mindfulness or just take a moment when I'm having a cup of tea."
My eyebrows are my most important thing that I've ever loved in my life
They're growing out still so I have to fill in the bits here, at the beginning and I use NYX Professional Makeup, Brow Tint Pen. And I feel like it's the easiest thing to use, you can literally draw on the tiniest, natural lines."
I've been on a massive journey with my own mental health
"That's really thanks to other people talking about it, to be honest. I have actually struggled for so long and I never knew what was going on until I saw someone talking about it on Twitter, or in an interview, or on TED Talks. So, I owe it to other people for opening my eyes to my own brain. So, that's why I talk about it, because other people talking about it helped me.
During lockdown in 2020, I started seeing a therapist and she has honestly changed my entire life. Everything is better now, since being able to speak to someone. I know therapy isn't the easiest thing to do for some people who don't haven't access, so I'd say just tell anyone how you're feeling. Tell your friend, tell your parents, tell a piece of paper, tell Twitter. Honestly, just write down and say how you're feeling out loud and it helps get it off your mind a little bit more.
I'd also say, just be inquisitive about your feelings, because as soon as you acknowledge a feeling, then you can work on it and change it, instead of pushing it to the side and saying, "I'm fine, I'm fine. I'm fine." Just be open to the thought of maybe not being okay. And that's fine, that you're not okay."
Start a journey of loving yourself
"Then everything else in life will be better. You are important, you are the focus. Focus on yourself, love yourself, and then live your life."
