The most stunning hair and beauty looks from the 2019 BAFTAs
After last year’s symbolic black taking over the red carpet in solidarity of the Time’s Up movement, the 2019 BAFTAs were a riot of colour in comparison and the celebs definitely didn’t disappoint when it came to their hair and makeup.
From disco-ready blue-lined eyes (thanks Margot) to bold red lips, elegant updos and cute hair bows.
One of the red carpet winners last night was Lucy Boynton, the star of Bohemian Rhapsody. We caught up with her makeup artist, Jo Baker, to get the low down on that show-stopping look, which Jo defined as a "dramatic power mood."
Lucy has been tearing up the red carpet rule book during an incredible awards season and there was no stopping her taste for experimentation last night, as Jo revealed, "I created with bold berry and aubergine-shading around her eyes with pops of antique-gold with a fishtail shadow effect, resulting in a statement shape. Lucy wanted something very different for today's look. Leaning into daring and exciting tones."
With natural skin seeming to be the red carpet trend of 2019, skincare was the key foundation to Lucy's look, as Jo revealed. "I prepped Lucy's skin using Weleda Skin Food. For a super rich, glowing complexion, this works great under foundation. I wanted Lucy's skin to be beaming with a champagne glow so I mixed Lancôme's Custom Drops Liquid Highlighter into foundation and added more on her cheek bones for extra shine."
What's the trick to those amazing eyes, I hear you cry? "I applied Lancôme's Le Monochromatique Spring Collection Eyeshadow in Rouge A La Folie throughout the crease then applied brown liner along her waterline, smudging it underneath her lash line and outwards, creating a fishtail-shaped edge and then finished with lots of the mascara." Lips wise, Lucy went for matchy-matchy with her gown.
Strap yourselves in for the ultimate eyebrow advice from Jo, too. "On Lucy's brows I applied Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Dip in Taupe to fill in the outer corners, before grooming them on top with a blonde brow pencil to keep her brows looking full but not too heavy - a great trick for natural blondes who have dark brows and want to experiment without reaching for the bleach!"

Margot’s BAFTA makeup was anything but boring. The actress’s go-to artist, Pati Dubriff, was the pro behind this, using a mix of Chanel products to create a statement disco-blue eye and peach lip. She told us, “I was trying to pick up some of the beads on the dress which is why I went for the electric blue.” She tried to replicate Margot’s blue and black sleeve using two liners, a black and a blue, “to make it look birdy, like a feather”, as well as using a few different mascaras, completing the look with a sprinkle of blue glitter to make the eyes pop.

Showing off her new brunette hair colour by Nicole Clarke at John Frieda, Cate’s glossy locks took centre stage in a simple down ‘do. Morag Ross did the make-up, keeping it understated with a smokey eye and subtle pink glow.

Makeup artist Lisa Eldridge worked with Lily to create a “dark lip vibe." She said she “added a flush of rose on her cheeks so that the look was not too gothic.” Lily wore her hair in a low-key bun to really show off the makeup to maximum effect.

Kate sure knows how to do princess elegant, working the red carpet in a chic chignon, soft smokey eye and glossy lip.

Kay Montano used Chantecaille products to nail Rachel’s romantic and dewy look, focusing on “enhancing Rachel’s features and beautiful skin.” She used Lip Veil in Elderberry to create the perfect stained lip for a velvety finish. Her hair was in-keeping with the beauty, styled in a sleek wave.

Looking polished to perfection, Amy’s make-up was kept youthful and simple, with thick black lashes and peach blush. We loved her centre-parted low ponytail that her hairstylist, Ken O’Rourke, created by first blow drying her hair using Charles Worthington's Volume & Bounce Blow Dry Primer, before straightening and pulling into a pony, topping it with a cute bow and spritzing a little Diamond Shine Gloss Spray to finish.

Jo Baker worked her magic, saying, “Lucy wanted something very different than today’s look, leaning into daring and exciting tones”, which was created using a pink and gold eye with a flash of raspberry-hued lipstick. Her hair was worked into a retro half-up style.

Mary Whiles decided to keep Rachel’s makeup subtle using, “the dress had a lot going on, so we wanted to keep the look simple but strong.” The sultry eyes were teamed with a loosely-textured updo.

Queen of glow, Charlotte Tilbury, did Salma’s BAFTA makeup, using her Magic Cream and Magic Foundation to create a flawless base, along with a smokey cat-eye flick and peachy lips. Salma’s hair was swept back into a high bun, framed with a head-turning beaded hairband.
