The fashion world is in mourning today after learning of the death of beloved designer, Virgil Abloh, who passed on Sunday, November 29th.  In a statement released to his Instagram account, it was confirmed that the founder of luxury streetwear label Off-White and artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton had been battling a rare form of cancer.

“We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues.”

“For over two years, Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma. He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture.”

“Through it all, his work ethic, infinite curiosity, and optimism never wavered. Virgil was driven by his dedication to his craft and to his mission to open doors for others and create pathways for greater equality in art and design. He often said, “Everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself,” believing deeply in the power of art to inspire future generations.”

“We thank you all for your love and support, and we ask for privacy as we grieve and celebrate Virgil’s life.”

One of the most loved and influential designers of his generation, Virgil was so much more than an epic fashion designer. A true visionary, he broke boundaries and created such an impact on the creative industry and its surrounding world that he changed the cultural landscape forever.

On a more personal level he was a man who always worked for something greater than his own career. As Vogue Editor-in-Chief Edward Enninful said, Virgil worked tirelessly “to open the door to art and fashion for future generations, so that they - unlike himself - would grow up in a creative world with people to mirror themselves in.”

Having had such a profound impact on so many, it was unsurprising that Sunday night's tragic news was met with seemingly endless tributes from designers, models, musicians and editors.

Hailey Bieber, who's wedding dress was designed by Abloh, was one of the first to react, saying: “Virgil completely changed the way I looked at street style and fashion, the way he looked at things inspired me deeply. I will never be able to fully express how grateful I am to have known him and worked with him.”
