Spoilers for The Testaments season one ending ahead!
We’ve been looking forward to The Testaments TV adaptation basically since The Handmaid’s Tale ended, and it did not disappoint. The sequel series took us even deeper into Gilead, exploring the girlhood and lost innocence at the heart of its story.
The series stars Chase Infiniti as Agnes and Lucy Halliday as Daisy, with Ann Dowd reprising her Handmaid’s Tale role as Aunt Lydia, among others. We were also pleasantly surprised to see Elisabeth Moss return as June, despite the character not appearing in the book. There were quite a few changes between The Testaments novel and the TV adaptation, right through to the finale.
But is this the end of the road for our Gilead girlies? Can we expect a second season of The Testaments? Here’s everything we know.
Will there be a season 2 of The Testaments?
Sometimes shows make us wait months after a first season airs to find out whether they’ve been renewed, while others are confirmed before they even debut. The Testaments landed somewhere in the middle of those two extremes.
Ahead of The Testaments season 1 finale on May 27, The Handmaid's Tale sequel was renewed for season 2.
"A secret we couldn't keep any longer. 💜 THE TESTAMENTS will be back for Season 2 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+," the show announced on social media at the time.
Hulu renewed the series after the first season experienced significant week-to-week growth in viewership with each new episode, according to Deadline.
Now, this is interesting.
Who will be in the cast of The Testaments season 2?
This has not yet been confirmed, but we can expect much of the main cast to return, especially given the critical acclaim many of them have received and the fact that their stories are far from over.
Season one starred Chase Infiniti as Agnes, Lucy Halliday as Daisy, Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, Rowan Blanchard as Shunammite, Mabel Li as Aunt Vidala, Brad Alexander as Garth Chapin, Isolde Ardies as Hulda Marie Edwardson, Amy Seimetz as Paula MacKenzie and Mattea Conforti as Rebecka “Becka” Grove.
We can likely expect Blanchard to return as Shunammite Hayes, especially after she spoke to Teen Vogue about where she hopes the character’s journey might go next, saying she wants Shunammite to realise “there is something bizarre going on.”
"I think, for the most part, she really wants to get pregnant and be married," Blanchard said of her character. “That's what she wants. So I wonder what will make her crack a little bit.”
Will Elisabeth Moss return as June for season 2?
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but Elisabeth Moss will likely return as June. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said: “I’ve said this since season one of Handmaid’s — but June’s story is never over until she makes sure that Hannah is safe. That’s all. That’s the end of it. Period.”
Since season one left Hannah/Agnes still trapped in Gilead, with June now aware of Daisy’s connection to her daughter, by Moss’s own definition June’s story is far from finished.
Plus, Moss is heavily involved behind the scenes as an executive producer. Creator Bruce Miller has also teased that a Hannah/June reunion is coming further down the line…
What will The Testaments season 2 be about?
Hulu has not shared what season two of The Testaments will be about, but it will likely pick up after the events of the season one finale.
The events of the first season didn’t exhaust the contents of the book, so there is still a way to go in terms of following Margaret Atwood’s story.

When will season 2 of The Testaments be released?
There’s no official release date yet, but the first three seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale had roughly a year between each instalment. We expect a similar timeline for The Testaments, with our best guess being summer 2027.
