Some of Hollywood's biggest stars are set to lead a TV series, The Studio, which is all about *checks notes* the struggles of surviving in the entertainment industry, looking at how the “business” element and the “arts” element of movies struggle to co-exist.
Yes, very meta. But who better to tell a story about drama in Hollywood than some of their biggest names? Seth Rogen has written, directed, executive produced and starred in the series – we wonder if any of the storylines were inspired by his own Hollywood experiences – with Schitt's Creek and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice actor Catherine O'Hara co-starring alongside Kathryn Hahn and a whole slate of A-listers.
It looks gorgeously shot, we're living vicariously through the LA sunshine and the world of movies. Here's everything we know so far about The Studio.
The Studio plot
Seth Rogen will star as protagonist Matt Remick, who has just been appointed as head of the show’s embattled Continental Studios.
The TV show's synopsis reads: “As movies struggle to stay alive and relevant, Matt and his core team of infighting executives battle their own insecurities as they wrangle narcissistic artists and craven corporate overlords in the ever-elusive pursuit of making great films.
"With their power suits masking their neverending sense of panic, every party, set visit, casting decision, marketing meeting, and award show presents them with an opportunity for glittering success or career-ending catastrophe. As someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes movies, it’s the job Matt’s been pursuing his whole life, and it may very well destroy him.”
The Studio cast
Joining Seth Rogen, Catherine O’Hara and Kathryn Hahn will be Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders, and even a guest appearance from Bryan Cranston. IMDB also has Zac Efron, Martin Scorsese and Usher listed on the cast list. Olivia Wilde is not officially on the cast list but features in a first look picture with Seth Rogen. We can't wait for this.
The Studio release date
The first two episodes of The Studio will debut on Apple TV+ on Wednesday 26 March, followed by weekly releases until the finale on 21 May.
The Studio trailer
The trailer is a doozy, we don't mind saying. It opens with Seth Rogen admitting that he doesn't know if running a movie studio means doing anything other than “ruining them”.
He says: “I love movies, but now I have this fear that my job is to ruin them”. Catherine O'Hara's character Amy responds that he's a “meat grinder”. Essentially, we're hoping for a look into how the “sausage” is made, when it comes to big Hollywood movies, brought to us by some of that world's biggest names.
Oh, and big-time director Martin Scorsese makes his big appearance in the trailer – we can't wait to see what kind of part he plays.
