Twenty years after the first film premiered, we were finally gifted The Devil Wears Prada 2. The entire cast returned — except for Andy’s awful boyfriend, of course. It had a strong opening weekend and quickly generated plenty of buzz, particularly for the way it captured the precarious state of modern journalism. Which naturally raises the question: could The Devil Wears Prada 3 be on the horizon?

The sequel successfully brought back major stars including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt, while also introducing new faces such as Lady Gaga (playing herself), Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu and Justin Theroux.

Will we have to wait another twenty years for a third instalment? Unlikely, but here’s what the stars have to say about another The Devil Wears Prada sequel. And by stars, we mean the cast… although we may also be consulting our horoscopes on the matter.

Will there be a The Devil Wears Prada 3?

At this moment, a third instalment of The Devil Wears Prada franchise has not been confirmed.

However, according to Variety, the second film is performing strongly at the box office. The outlet reported it made $10 million in previews, with projections suggesting an opening weekend between $75 million and $80 million—though some estimates place it even higher, in the $90 million to $100 million range, driven by the enduring popularity of the original.

The sequel’s budget is reported to be over $100 million, plus marketing costs, significantly higher than the original film’s $40 million. It is expected to surpass the first film’s lifetime gross within weeks. For comparison, The Devil Wears Prada opened to $27.5 million and went on to earn $125 million domestically and $326 million worldwide.

Critically and with audiences, the sequel is also holding up well, currently sitting at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. Taken together, all of this places it in a strong position for a potential third film.

Would the actors return for The Devil Wears Prada 3?

Obviously, the cast have been asked about the possibility of a third instalment—and surprisingly, they didn’t dodge the question.

For Streep, it all comes down to “the script,” as she immediately told People when asked. Blunt readily agreed, adding, “A good script. It’s all about the script.”

For Hathaway, it also hinges on who else returns. “And then, everybody has to say yes,” she specified. Blunt then clarified, “It’s got to be the core four,” referring to herself, Hathaway, Streep and Stanley Tucci.

Streep then playfully joked that the four “have to be alive.”

Blunt also expressed interest in a third instalment, noting that she and Tucci have some unfinished business on screen. “We love what we got to do, but we didn’t get enough to do together,” she told Entertainment Weekly, adding that they wanted “a little more to chew on together” in the next film. Tucci is married to Blunt’s sister, Felicity Blunt, making the dynamic even more compelling for a potential on-screen showdown.

Hathaway also remains optimistic about a third film: “I feel like there’s more road to explore,” she said, adding, “But we’ll probably have a better idea of that [when the film comes out].”

She echoed a similar sentiment at The Devil Wears Prada 2 premiere in New York City on April 20. “If we do another one, they better have us joined at the hip,” she told E! News. “I love him.”

Is the director interested in making a third The Devil Wears Prada movie?

Like the rest of the cast, director David Frankel is also waiting to see what might happen with a potential third film. He worked on both the original 2006 movie and The Devil Wears Prada 2.

“Let’s see what happens. It’s show business. It’s anybody’s guess. We said no 20 years ago, and here we are,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t want to say yes now. They are very rich characters, they’re amazing actors, there’s great screenwriting, so I could imagine that these characters might live on.”

When would The Devil Wears Prada 3 be released?

Blunt doesn’t think a sequel would come right away, telling Entertainment Weekly: “We believe in letting a lot of time sizzle between these movies.”

“I hope they don’t wait 20 years!” Streep told the outlet.

“I don’t think we can do it in another 20 years. I’ll be dead,” Tucci added, joking that a sequel to the sequel might only happen “if they exhume us” from the grave. Still, he admitted that if a third film does happen, “it could be fun.”

We doubt it would take another twenty years, but perhaps five or so. As for what it could be about, fans have already floated ideas ranging from a Miranda Priestly prequel exploring her rise through the industry (in the vein of Lily James playing young Donna in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) to a storyline where Andy eventually takes over Runway—though, admittedly, we’re not prioritising realism here.

Speaking of a potential third film, Streep had a specific direction in mind. She mentioned her interest in bringing Lady Gaga back: “She's amazing… She should probably take over for me.”

We’ll keep you posted on any updates about The Devil Wears Prada 3.
