The Stolen Girl spoilers ahead…

Well, that Stolen Girl ending was something else — and we're going to be mulling it over for weeks.

A good thriller should feel kind of falling down a rabbit hole of questions — the more you learn about the characters, the more mysterious the story becomes. And that's exactly what watching The Stolen Girl on Disney+ feels like.

The premise hooks you from the start: a seemingly happy couple go to pick up their daughter from a playdate, only to discover that the mother, her daughter, and their daughter have all vanished into thin air. From there, the show takes on a truly wild ride as we uncover the complicated truth about why and how this woman abducted the couple's child. And we can tell you right now — it's a pretty thorny, convoluted tale.

It begins with Elisa (Denise Gough), her husband, Fred (Jim Sturgess) and their two children, daughter Lucia (Beatrice Campbell) and son Georgie. Lucia befriends Josephine (Robyn Betteridge) and goes to her house for a playdate. However, when Elisa and Fred go to pick her up, the mother, Rebecca (Holliday Grainger), Josephine and Lucia have all disappeared.

Over the course of five episodes, Elisa teams up with journalist Selma (Ambika Mod) to find her daughter — and we all learn a whole lot more along the way.

So, what exactly happens at the end of The Stolen Girl? Does Elisa find Lucia? Why did Rebecca abduct her? And where does everyone end up? Get ready, because it's one complicated tale.

The truth about Rebecca

One of the first things we learn is that Rebecca is not who she says she is. It turns out, she is, in fact, somebody called Nina — and her backstory is pretty tragic.

Nina had once been married to a man called Nicolas Thibault. The pair had two daughters, Josephine and Rose. However, in 2021, Nicolas and Rose were killed in a tragic hit and run accident. As Nina says, her life “was ruined in an instant” and she was left to raise Josephine on her own.

The truth about Elisa

We also learn that Elisa was connected to Nina's tragic story. It turns out, she was behind the wheel.

Elisa sped away from the scene and let someone else take the blame. Marcus Turner, it turns out, had been having an affair with Elisa — he had been hoping that Elisa would leave her husband and marry him. Elisa was even pregnant with his child at the time — Georgie, we learn, is actually the biological son of Marcus, not Fred. Out of love, he confessed to the crime and had been in jail ever since. Elisa cut off all communication and continued her “perfect” life. Pretty dark stuff.

Nina, however, knew the truth. Ever since the accident, she had been plotting her revenge on Elisa — she decided to steal her daughter, just as her own daughter had been stolen from her.

Elisa's complicated past

Elisa's backstory gets even more complex when we learn the truth about why she sped off after hitting Nicholas and Rose — as it turns out, she was on a mission to visit her dying father. But no, she was not visiting him to bid him a fond farewell.

Elisa, we learn, had grown up in a religious commune and had been abused by her father as a child. She mission to visit her father and make sure that… well… he really was dying.

When Elisa caught her father visiting her own daughter, Lucia, in her room, she ended up pushing him down the stairs and killing him. Yes, by our count that's three murders in one day! We told you it was a complicated tale.

The Stolen Girl ending: the final showdown in France

Things come to head in a gripping finale. Selma and Elisa, having tracked Nina and the girls down in France, are on their way to find them and retrieve Lucia. However, they're on a race against time as the police have started putting Nina's image out — she'll know they're onto them soon enough.

Meanwhile, Lucia, who was initially told by Nina that she was really her own child, has discovered the truth. As she runs away from Nina and Josephine, Elisa and Selma pull up in their car — which leads to the final showdown.

Elisa finally owns up to being responsible for the hit and run and explains her own trauma that led her to flee the scene. Meanwhile, Nina owns up to her own mistakes. The pair realise they have “destroyed each other."

Lucia returns to her mother, while Nina and Josephine manage to escape the police.
