The Other Bennet Sister is officially our period drama obsession of the year. Adapted from The Other Bennet Sister, this new BBC series reimagines Pride and Prejudice by placing the spotlight on Mary Bennet — the often-overlooked middle daughter of literature’s most famous family.

Call the Midwife star Ella Bruccoleri leads the cast as Mary, alongside Ruth Jones (best known for Gavin & Stacey), Richard E. Grant, Indira Varma, Richard Coyle, Laurie Davidson and Dónal Finn.

As the show explores Mary's life beyond the original Austen novel, her journey takes her far beyond the Bennet family home in Meryton, from the elegant soirées of London society to the sweeping landscapes of the Lake District, as she searches for independence, self-love and reinvention. And while we love watching Mary's unexpected love story, we also can't help but letting our eyes drift off to the show’s beautiful backdrops are just as compelling. Here’s everywhere The Other Bennet Sister was filmed.

Where is The Other Bennet Sister filmed?

Despite its Lake District setting, filming predominantly took place in Wales and Bristol.

Reflecting on returning to familiar territory during production, Ruth Jones, who plays Mrs Bennet, said, “I love coming back to Wales. I recognise so many crew members I've worked with before, and it makes me proud that we're creating a production like this here. Locations like St Fagans National Museum of History are places I've known since childhood.”

Orchard Street, Bristol

Rather than taking on the chaos of London, The Other Bennet Sister filming locations recreated Regency-era London in Bristol.

Orchard Street doubled as Cheapside, the historic street near St Paul's Cathedral. With its preserved Georgian architecture, the street offers a convincing step back in time, having originally been built as a row of merchants’ houses in the late 18th century.

Berkeley Square, Bristol

While filming in Bristol, the crew also used Berkeley Square in the Clifton area for several outdoor scenes.

Dating back to around 1790, the square is known for its elegant Georgian-style buildings arranged around a central grassy garden, making it a fitting backdrop for a period drama.

Llancaiach Fawr Manor, Caerphilly

This Tudor manor house near the village of Nelson was used as an inn in The Other Bennet Sister.

Llancaiach Fawr Manor, a striking 16th-century manor house, provided the perfect historic backdrop for the scene. However, the heritage site has been closed to the public since December 2024 following local council budget cuts.

St Fagans National Museum of History, Cardiff

Located in the village of St Fagans, St Fagans National Museum of History is an open-air museum that chronicles the lifestyle, culture and architecture of the Welsh people.

Although the series is not set in Wales, the site proved to be an especially useful The Other Bennet Sister filming location. The museum doubled as the interior of the inn whose exterior was filmed at Llancaiach Fawr Manor, helping bring the show’s Regency-era world to life.

Dyffryn House and Gardens, Vale of Glamorgan

One of the most breathtaking The Other Bennet Sister filming locations in The Other Bennet Sister — and the one that had many of us immediately reaching for Google — is from the poetry-reading scene.

The scene was filmed in the Pompeian Garden at Dyffryn House and Gardens. Visitors can explore the Edwardian gardens, which feature an arboretum, a glasshouse and even a wild play area.

Penpont House, Bannau Brycheiniog

Penpont House is a family-run estate set on the banks of the River Usk in the heart of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (also known as the Brecon Beacons National Park).

In The Other Bennet Sister, the historic estate served as the fictional village of Meryton, providing the picturesque backdrop for the series’ small-town scenes.

Bannau Brycheiniog National Park

Plenty more scenes were also filmed in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (also known as the Brecon Beacons National Park).

The boat scenes set on Lake Windermere — one of the most famous locations in the Lake District — were actually filmed on a private lake in the Brecon Beacons. Meanwhile, Scafell Pike was recreated using the dramatic landscape of the Black Mountains.

Discussing the Welsh filming experience, Ella Bruccoleri told Country & Town House, “I loved filming in Wales. I can't speak highly enough about it; it was like a revelation for me. I'd only been there once, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is the most beautiful country in the world!’ I was blown away by it.

“Some of our locations had to stand in for the Lake District so we did a lot of filming in the Brecon Beacons and on all these beautiful lakes. It was quite breathtaking. There were days when Dónal Finn and I just had to row on a lake all day whilst they captured shots of us in the sun; it was incredible.”

Bridgend

This small town in South Wales, tucked between Cardiff and Swansea, stood in for Longbourn in the BBC series.

Bridgend was used to recreate Longbourn, which is the fictional village in Hertfordshire that serves as the home of the Bennet family in Pride and Prejudice, and therefore also appears in The Other Bennet Sister.

The Other Bennet Sister is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
