Meet the cast of A Woman of Substance
The star of the show is brought to life by two talented actors. We first meet 79-year-old Emma at the height of her success, far removed from her humble beginnings. Beneath all the wealth and influence lies a long, complicated journey that began decades earlier in the Yorkshire countryside.
Brenda Blethyn plays the heroine in her later years. The acting legend is best known for playing DCI Vera Stanhope in the ITV crime drama Vera. She is also a BAFTA and Golden Globe winner for her acclaimed performance in Secrets & Lies, and has appeared in films including Saving Grace, Pride & Prejudice and Little Voice.
The younger Emma Harte works as a maid at the imposing Fairley Hall. Through flashbacks, we see her scorned by the Fairley family, yet the determined seamstress refuses to accept the limitations imposed by her class and circumstances.
Irish actress Jessica Reynolds made her television debut in the comedy-drama My Left Nut in 2020. She has since appeared in Outlander, Netflix series House of Guinness, and the 2024 film Kneecap.
As the youngest son of the Fairley family, Edwin is charming and quickly catches the eye of young Emma. Their romance is complicated: he is drawn to her, yet weighed down by the expectations of upholding his family’s honour.
Ewan Horrocks is no stranger to historical drama, having appeared in Domina, and may also be familiar to viewers from the Netflix series The Last Kingdom.
Those piercing blue eyes belong to Will Mellor, who plays Jack Harte. He is Emma’s father, devoted to his wife and children, but constantly struggling to provide for the family.
Mellor has appeared in a range of British TV favourites, including Coronation Street, Mr Bates vs The Post Office and Broadchurch. He also competed in the 20th series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2022, where he was partnered with Nancy Xu.
Emmet J. Scanlan takes on the role of Adam Fairley, Master of Fairley Hall. As heir to the wealthy Yorkshire family Emma serves, Adam is known for his commanding presence and difficult temperament, placing him at the centre of Emma’s early life.
The Irish actor is known for always playing the bad boy, whether that's as Brendan Brady in Hollyoaks, then Billy Grade in Peaky Blinders, and afterwards Frank Kinsella in Kin.
Taking on the glamorous mantle of Adele Fairley, Adam’s wife, is Leanne Best. This complex role tackles mental illness in a time when it was widely misunderstood, delivering demanding and deeply emotional scenes.
You might recognise Best for her roles in Line of Duty, The Crown, and the blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
And playing Adele’s sister, Lydia Leonard takes on the role of Olivia Wainwright. She stirs up tension within the family with her feelings for her brother-in-law, Adam Fairley, making her a pivotal figure in Emma’s evolving world.
Leonard is known for her roles in The Crown, Down Cemetery Road, Gentleman Jack, Absentia, and the film Last Christmas.
Played by Lenny Rush, Frank Harte is Emma’s younger brother and one of her closest allies, having grown up alongside her in poverty.
Despite being only 16, Rush has an impressive résumé. He’s best known for The Dumping Ground, Am I Being Unreasonable?, and a memorable appearance in Doctor Who.
A Woman of Substance is now streaming on Channel 4 at 9 pm every Wednesday and Thursday.
