I've come to realise that party season, while a riot for back-to-back glitzy events, is the opposite when it comes to getting dressed. M&S x 16Arlington launched this morning, though, and now my opinion may be swaying.
Put it this way; while I love sparkly lights and tinsel at Christmas and New Year's, I don't necessarily want to wear them. Come November/December it's a constant battle of putting on my failsafe wide-leg trousers and a nice top, or venturing out of my comfort zone and risking looking like a total disco ball (not a bad thing, BTW).
This 43-piece collab collection, though? Full of sharply tailored suits and separates with wearable beaded trims and tactful embellishments – exactly what you'd expect from a fusion between both British fashion brands, and much more doable for those of us who're less confident about sparkling head-to-toe. And it's live to shop right now.
“This collaboration has allowed us to explore our signatures in a new way. We wanted it to feel empowering and expressive, bringing confidence and personality into everyday moments, while still capturing the drama and detail we're known for,” says Marco Capaldo, founder and creative director at 16Arlington. “It's meant to be worn,” he claims.
M&S x 16Arlington, a fashion writer's top picks:
With plenty other collaborations launching this week – adidas Originals x ASOS, H&M x Glenn Martens, and Wales Bonner x adidas, to name just a few – I don't blame you for feeling overwhelmed/not knowing where to look first.
I'm generally far more confident at a party – especially around people I've just met – in a chic two-piece as opposed to a steal-the-show frock. It's probably a placebo but floor-length trousers, a blazer or shirt with a nipped-in waist and a killer winter coat over my shoulders instantly make me feel powerful and poised. Below is what I've added to my cart and am checking out with as speak, for that very reason:
In the campaign's lookbook, fronted by Georgia May Jagger, Marco's high-fashion edge alongside M&S's signature accessibility is evident throughout. Hero pieces include a crystal-draped maxi dress – perfect for those of you who are braver in the sequin dress department – a leather jacket and trouser co-ord, and a satin shirt that features the iconic 16Arlington oversized collar.
According to Maddy Evans, director of M&S Woman, the high-street retailer has been attracted the fashion set-favoured designer for some time now. “[16Arlington] has attracted a famous following renowned for its bold vision and statement eveningwear,” she says. “At the heart of our designer collaborations is a commitment to deliver exceptionally unique products for our customers that infuse fresh creativity into our collections.”
“Partnering with M&S felt right: They're beautifully British, trusted, and understand good design should be for everyone,” Capaldo adds.
The limited-edition collection will be available from Thursday 30th October at M&S.com (i.e. TODAY) and in select UK stores: Battersea, Marble Arch, Manchester and Grafton Street, Dublin. Prices start at £35 (for the jewellery) and go up to £300 (for the cashmere knitwear), and as for the size range; clothing ranges from a 6-18/XS-L with footwear is available in sizes 3-8.

Best M&S x 16Arlington dresses
I have to say, despite my usual reservations of the typical party dress, the ones in this collection might have me sold. The off-the-shoulder long-sleeve and the bandeau midi? Straight in my basket.
Best M&S x 16Arlington bottoms
Jeans and a nice top will always be the answer to casual dresscodes, but this season I implore you to switch it around. Try one of your best t-shirts with one of the fun skirts below.

Obviously, if you're planning to dance the night away (or at least ‘til midnight), a pair of comfortable heels is always the best shout. While I can’t guarantee the below will feel like you're walking on a cloud I can promise that they'll look absolutely killer – and sometimes that's the sacrifice you have to make, right?
Best M&S x 16Arlington accessories
Going to a low-key event this November/December? Some chunky jewellery (i.e. the below statement earrings) and a fun clutch is all the accessories you need.

M&S is one of the best knitwear brands anyway, but they've taken it one step further with this line-up courtesy of some party-ready embellishments. Obsessed.
Best M&S x 16Arlington jackets
A faux fur coat and a chic leather jacket sit alongside the aforementioned blazer and maxi coat, and they both call to be strewn over the shoulders of your eventwear. Effortless.
