Joy Sunday turned up to the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards and said two things: this is how you wear latex, and the naked lash trend is dead.
The Wednesday star took to the red carpet in a bold red latex dress by Atsuko Kudo Couture, Jimmy Choo sandals and a stack of diamond ear studs – styled by fashion stylist Darryl Glover – but as well as her incredible 'fit, it was her standout glam that stole the show for us.
To complement her gown, Lancôme Global International Artist Sheika Daley gave Joy a high-gloss, lacquered red lip, soft glowy skin, subtle flushed cheeks, heavy eyeliner and – the makeup pièce de résistance – sky-high spiky lashes.

These voluminous, fluttery eyelashes are reminiscent of the retro doll lash look that was pioneered in the 1960s by celebrities including Twiggy and Sharon Tate. Today, tutorials on ‘manga lashes’ and ‘spider lashes’ regularly crop up on Beauty Tok, where lashes appear in pointy clusters that are spaced out along the top and bottom lash lines, creating a spiky look. This is usually achieved by carefully spacing out individual false lashes as opposed to strip lashes.
It's basically the perfect antidote to the recent revival of barely-there makeup, with mascara noticeably absent from the faces of various celebrities including Florence Pugh and Kylie Jenner.
We're hard pushed to think of any look that Joy Sunday couldn't pull off, but this is certainly up there with one of our favourite red carpet beauty looks this year so far. Are you team ‘no mascara’ or team ‘spiky doll lashes’?
