Before we dive into what jackets to wear with jeans, some context: In a bid to make smarter shopping choices, I'm trying not to buy individual pieces, but rather build outfits in my head before hitting the checkout. So, when investing in some new jeans for spring, I needed to know how I was going to layer up on my top half.

While some flick through the pages of print magazines and others trawl Pinterest, I turn to a regular rotation of street-style stars for lessons in post-winter layering — the likes of Dakota Johnson, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Kendall Jenner and Julianne Moore.
What I learnt? That I could lean hard into the ‘70s trend by wearing wide-leg jeans with suede jackets, or how about making my cropped trench coat pop with white denim?
Yeah, if it wasn’t obvious, I'm not planning on building a spring capsule wardrobe — yet I will advocate that this is one way to ensure you actually wear all your clothes. But, for those who, like me, appreciate options when it comes to spring dressing, read on to discover the five styles of jackets to wear with jeans this spring, as confirmed by the fashion set.
Ahead, what jackets to wear with jeans this spring, according to the fashion set:
Suede jackets with wide-leg jeans
What started as a staple of any boho babe's uniform back in the ‘70s has become a mainstream hit. Although there seem to be two camps — those who favour a longline, blazer-style suede jacket, versus the cropped, collared crowd.
While I don't want to encourage overconsumption, I've personally invested in both. That's because Dakota's favourite works best when getting dressed for my corporate office job, the lapels making this style feel a little more elevated — even when thrown over a basic white t-shirt. My soft-touch trucker jacket then comes into play at the weekends, often paired with leather ballet flats that are best suited to relaxed coffee runs rather than commuting.
When it comes to jeans, I like the added height full-length straight-leg or wide-leg jeans provide — especially when wearing a shorter jacket on top. But this will also help you lean further into the ‘70s vibe we’re mutually loving RN.
Trench coats with white jeans
While fashion can be unpredictable, one guarantee is that the humble trench coat will make its return each spring. Super versatile and unpredictable weather-approved, this light layer can be thrown over almost everything in your wardrobe, from turn-up jeans to summer dresses.
And while the trench itself has had a 2026 upgrade — we're seeing them finished with funnel necks as opposed to flappy lapels — we've also seen a shift in how the fashion set are styling them. While at the end of last year, the preference might have been a dark denim wash, I, too, am suggesting you sub-in white jeans this season, which will allow the camel or khaki colour of your spring jacket to pop. Shape-wise, shall we all follow Alexa Chung's example and go cropped?
Leather jacket with barrel jeans
Your dad might question whether you've joined the T-Birds when you throw on a leather jacket, but I'd argue it's one of the hardest-working items in my wardrobe. In winter, I layer mine over knits or thermal tees, and in summer, it's my go-to when trying to add a bit of edge to a midi dress. And while your cropped leather jacket from summer's past will still work, it's the oversized, bomber-style we're collectively gravitating towards this season.
I'm personally taking note of Hailey Bieber's styling, enjoying the primary colour pop and her barrel leg jeans, the tapered ankle helping to balance the inflated shape on top.
Double denim with bootcut jeans
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake did it first, but Julianne Moore did it best. While the Canadian tuxedo once indicated that you weren't interested in fashion, donning double denim now signals that you keep up with current trends.
I'm seeing cinched denim shirts all over the high street — and in summer, when we can go without a jacket, I'm sure I'll jump on board. But with spring unpredictable in terms of temperature, I'm certain I'll need a jacket — specifically, one of these funnel neck jackets finished in a hue of blue.
Layered up over a striped t-shirt (this £29 COS option is currently in my basket) or rugby shirt, I'd say it's a strong off-duty look.
Again, though, you've got to think of the overall shape you're creating when settling on jeans. The bubble-shape of this Nobody's Child jacket might feel out of proportion unless balanced with a flared jean — or bootcut if adding suede ankle boots as a finishing touch.
Bomber jacket with straight-leg jeans
Potentially the most low-effort, high-impact layer ever, a bomber jacket is a street-style (and European fashion week) favourite. Remember that khaki Topshop jacket we all lusted after as teens? It's back, and a clear sign that this is a jacket style that will never really be ‘out’.
Like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, I'm in favour of contrasting the relaxed vibe of a bomber with a smarter style of denim — say, a straight-leg jean — and a pointed boot or kitten heel to intensify the elongating effect of my denim.
