Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie are celebrating multiple Oscar awards nominations for their record-breaking movie Barbie, but both have been left out of their own respective categories for Best Director and Best Actress, following Tuesday's announcement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts.
The film, which has won eight nominations in total, was arguably 2023's biggest cinema hit – as the highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide, it was also widely considered a cultural watershed marker and signalled huge success for Greta Gerwig as a female filmmaker.
While left out of the Best Director and Best Actress categories, Barbie did secure nominations for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (America Ferrera), Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, Best Original Song (for both I'm Just Ken and What Was I Made For?) and Best Production Design.
From Barbie to All of Us Strangers and Past Lives, here’s how to watch this year’s biggest contenders.

Following the news, countless film fans have taken to social media in shock – particularly in response to Greta's snub.
One wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “So Greta Gerwig created one of the most original films of the decade, one that completely blew apart people’s expectations of what a #Barbie movie could be & resonated with millions … yet apparently that’s not *quite* worth a nomination for best director???”
Another pointed out: “Greta Gerwig made a film that was critically acclaimed, culturally impactful, hilarious, unique, visually exceptional, perfectly cast and acted, left people laughing, crying and thinking AND made a billion dollars at the box office. But no Best Director nom?!”

Others point out that Ryan Gosling (a.k.a., Ken) has been nominated for his work in the film – while Barbie's two biggest female creators, Margot and Greta (the movie's lead actress and producer, and the director) were not.
The Oscar nominations come following both the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes, where both women were previously nominated in the Best Actress and Best Director categories.
The 2024 Oscars will take place on Sunday 10 March 2024. You can see all the nominations here.
