What is the Corn Moon? And why isn’t September’s moon called the Harvest Moon this year?
September's full moon is often referred to as the Corn Moon because it coincides with a time that farmers would traditionally be gathering the harvest. It’s often also known as the Harvest Moon for much the same reason but as the Harvest Moon is traditionally the full moon closest to the autumn equinox (which falls on 22 September this year) that accolade goes to the 7 October full moon this year.
The autumn equinox marks the start of Libra season which begins on 22 September in 2025.
What is a lunar eclipse?
This Corn Blood Moon is made even more special because it coincides with a total lunar eclipse.
For the uninitiated, a lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth and moon are aligned, with the Earth in the middle and blocking out sunlight, while a little light reaches the moon past the Earth's edges.
In the UK, we won’t be able to see the total eclipse in its entirety but, if the clouds oblige, we may be able to catch a glimpse as the moon rises after sunset.
