The Blink Twice ending left us with a lot of unanswered questions, but according to Zoë Kravitz that's kind of the point.

Marking Kravitz's directorial debut, the new film follows the story of tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) and cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) as they live out a seemingly dreamy holiday on his private island, though things quickly take a turn.

So what was the deal with the Blind Twice ending?

Well, according to Kravitz the ambiguity is intentional, with her explaining in an interview, "There's a lot of open-ended questions that I hope spark conversations. Is this the beginning of something or is this the end of something? Is it the continuation of something? I think those are all up for debate, and I'm curious what that makes people feel."

First off, what happens in the film?

Friends Frida (Naomi Ackie) and Jess (Alia Shawkat) meet billionaire tech mogul Slater King while working as waitresses at a high profile charity event. After hitting it off with Slater, the billionaire invites the two on a trip to his private island. Ideal, right?

As we gradually see though, the setup perhaps isn't as idyllic as first impressions might suggest, and a few odd things start piling up.

Namely, Jess notices gaps in her memory, Frida has a few weird interactions with a maid who refers to her as ‘Red Rabbit’, all of the locals on the island have the same snake tattoo. You get the picture – a few things just seem off.

Eventually, Jess actually goes missing and Frida is the only one who notices, with her quickly realising that something isn't right.

Though Frida and Sarah initially clash vying for Slater's attention, the two end up teaming up to try and piece things together for themselves. The pair realise that the perfume they've been gifted has been drugged to make them forget their memories each night after Slater's friends and business partners have sexually assaulted the women. However, given that their phones have been confiscated by Slater's assistant and they're on an island in the middle of nowhere, they seemingly have no way of escaping.

After Frida realises a native flower capable of erasing memories has been in their meals and perfume, she soon uncovers that snake venom is the antidote to the flower's effects, with her convincing Sarah of what's happening and encouraging her to drink the venom. The two then trick the rest of the women on the island into drinking the venom to restore their memories.

The ending of Blink Twice, explained

While looking for her stolen phone in Slater's office, Frida instead stumbles across a box of polaroids of all of the women who have been brought to the island. Among them, she later finds one of herself.

Frida gradually realises that this isn't her first visit to the island, with the scar on her face due to a previous escape attempt in which she was dragged through the dirt in which she's seen clawing at the ground with her nails which feature…yep, red rabbits on them. The revelation that Frida has already undergone this trauma make the entire thing all the more haunting.

Over dinner, Frida and Sarah anxiously wait for the venom to take its effects on the other women, with them rising up to fight back once they begin remembering the horrific abuse they've been subjected to. Though there are several casualties along the way, Frida and Sarah survive.

While Frida has the chance to kill Slater, much to Sarah's confusion she chooses not to. Fast forward sometime into the future and we see Frida being honoured at a gala not dissimilar to the one Slater was at in the start of the film. It's revealed that Frida is now married to Slater, with her having taken up his former position as CEO.

We learn that she's been drugging his vape with the same flower he used to make her forget her memories, essentially seizing control of his empire in an incredible, eerie twist. We can't help but think back to Frida telling Jess at the start of the film “Success is the best revenge.”

Yes indeed, Frida.
