I bought the Biodance Collagen Mask before it went viral – here's why I still use it

The Biodance collagen mask has become one of the most viral K-beauty products of late, but does it actually live up to the hype? I've been testing it for years to find out.

Ah, the Biodance collagen mask. If there’s one thing K-beauty has mastered, it’s the art of the sheet mask. From ultra-hydrating hydrogel formulas to overnight treatments designed to leave skin looking bouncier by morning, Korean skincare has turned masking into something far more results-driven than the once-a-week, clay-based formulas we grew up with.

And the latest innovation to grab the internet’s attention is said Biodance Bio-Collagen Real Deep Face Mask (less than £10 in the Amazon beauty sale today) – a product that built a cult following in Korea before going viral and then inspiring a host of other brands to follow suit. Promising a glassy, plump-looking finish after a single use, I actually first discovered these masks a few years ago, long before it started trending. Proof that I am, sometimes, ahead of the curve.

At the time, it was almost impossible to get hold of in the UK, so after spotting it circulating online I ended up ordering a box from Amazon US and having it shipped over just so I could try it.

Now, Biodance as a brand has become much easier to find – not just in K-beauty stores, but it’s also available at Cult Beauty, Boots and Marks and Spencer – and after trying a few of the other similar collagen masks, I decided it was time to go back to the original and see whether it still lives up to the hype and how it compares.

I first tried the Biodance Bio-Collagen mask three years ago, and I still reach for it today.

How I tested the Biodance collagen face mask

Just because a product is viral, it doesn't mean it's actually good – so I wanted to ensure I tested the Biodance Bio-Collagen face mask thoroughly before recommending it (or not) to you. Conviniently, I actually shipped the Biodance Bio-Collagen Real Deep Face Mask over from the US years ago, when it wasn't available to buy in the UK, and have been reaching for it ever since.

Over the years, I've tested the Biodance Bio-Collagen Real Deep Face Mask at different times of the day. They’re designed to be worn for at least three hours, allowing the ingredients plenty of time to absorb. I work from home most of the time, so I will sometimes apply a mask after lunch and leave it on throughout the afternoon while I’m on my laptop (in fact I am wearing one right now as I type this), or sometimes I’ll apply in the evening after cleansing and let it adhere to my skin for a few hours before I go to bed.

To help get a better understanding of how a mask performs, I used them several times over a couple of weeks, paying attention to hydration levels, texture and how my skin looked immediately after removing and a few hours later. I also ensured it wasn't just me testing it: I enlisted the help of Allure's Angela Trakoshis to test it, too. Her videos – of the mask performing on another skin type – are below.

Why you can trust me

I filmed myself applying the Biodance Bio-Collagen Real Deep Mask at home.

I’m a skincare-obsessed beauty editor who has spent years testing different product formulas and reporting on emerging trends across the beauty industry. I've written for titles including Glamour UK, Cosmopolitan, Stylist, British Vogue and ELLE UK, and I am always testing new launches, from viral TikTok products to dermatologist-approved staples, to see whether they genuinely deliver on their claims. I speak to dermatologists, hair stylists, makeup artists and doctors regularly to support my findings, and I am regularly invited to press and influencer events to get first-looks at the hottest launches.

Sheet masks, in particular, are something I’ve tested extensively over the years, including countless Korean formulas known for their hydrating and skin-plumping properties.

What does the Biodance collagen face mask do?

The Biodance collagen face mask is designed to deeply hydrate skin while helping it look smoother, firmer and more radiant – which we all want, right? Unlike traditional sheet masks, it uses a hydrogel texture, which allows the mask to sit closer to the skin and gradually release ingredients over time.

What are those ingredients? It features hydrolysed collagen, which helps improve skin elasticity and reduce fine lines. Board-certified dermatologist Nina Desai, MD previously explained to Allure that hydrolysed collagen rejuvenates your complexion by supposedly stimulating skin cells to produce brand-new collagen. In addition, there’s hyaluronic acid, which is one of my favourite ingredients. It’s basically like a tall glass of water for your skin, leaving it plump and dewy. The mask also contains niacinamide to even out your complexion and centella asiatica extract, which soothes and calms any irritation, making this mask great to use after a detoxing mask for acne treatment. Together, these ingredients aim to leave skin looking plumper, more hydrated and noticeably glowier – the sort of glass-skin effect that Korean skincare has become famous for.

Here’s what else makes this mask unique: Unlike your typical 15 to 20 minute sheet mask, you actually leave it on for three to four hours until it becomes translucent, which indicates that your skin has absorbed all the essence. How does that work? I tapped cosmetic chemist Kelly Dobos to explain. “The change that happens here is likely from a change in the hydration and temperature of the mask once applied to the skin,” she says. Dobos adds that this sheet mask is likely somewhat occlusive, creating a seal to trap in the moisture the mask is giving the skin.

The application is easy. After cleansing and toning my skin, I unfold the mask and fit it over my face, making sure it adheres snugly. Then, let it do its magic while you relax. When I take it off, I just gently massage in any remaining essence. No rinsing is needed.

My first impressions

This isn’t the first time I’ve used the Biodance collagen mask. A couple of years ago, long before they started popping up all over TikTok, I ordered a box from Amazon US after seeing them mentioned in skincare circles – back when Biodance was impossible to find in the UK.

The first thing that stood out to me was the texture. Unlike traditional sheet masks, which tend to be thin and soaked in serum, this one has a thicker hydrogel consistency that helps it cling closely to the skin without slipping around. Once applied, it feels more like placing two cool, jelly-like patches over your face than using a typical sheet mask. Be warned, though, they can be quite slippery and – if you have long nails – they can easily tear. As it sits on the skin, the mask slowly begins to change. Rather than drying out, the hydrogel gradually turns clear as the ingredients absorb. The masks do take 20 minutes or so to adhere to skin properly though, but once it's dried down a little bit, it stays put well.

My experience using the Biodance collagen face mask

When I used it, I noticed the change first around my forehead and mouth area, particularly my upper lip, where the mask became almost transparent before the rest slowly followed. Another thing that makes it different is the wear time.

While most sheet masks are designed to come off after 15 or 20 minutes, as I mentioned previously, the Biodance mask stays on for at least three hours, with many people choosing to keep them on even longer. I'm definitely that person sometimes, but know that requires both planning and patience. That said, I do think they’re perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon or a work-from-home day when the diary is clear and there are no meetings.

I took a photograph of myself straight after putting the face mask on.

I removed the face mask after three hours and was so impressed with the immediate glow.

After removing the mask, my skin always feels hydrated and looks smoother, with the kind of subtle glow K-beauty is known for. The glow doesn’t last forever, but for a few hours afterwards my skin looks noticeably smoother and more hydrated. I do think there is something in the longer term benefits of regularly using these masks, plus they’re great for long-haul travel.

Another thing to note is that I did try sleeping in them a couple of times but didn’t have much success. I’m a front sleeper, so the masks tended to become unstuck and move around, or I’d feel slightly claustrophobic and end up ripping them off in the middle of the night, meaning my skin looked no different by morning.

How did Angela find it? “When I wake up, my skin is so hydrated and smooth that it literally looks like glass,” she said. "And that’s just one night. After using this mask for a week, my skin feels firmer, looks brighter, and is so hydrated — like my face went on a retreat and came back dewy, healthy, and refreshed. As someone who doesn’t drink as much water as I should (don’t tell my doctor), this mask is the hydration my skin has been craving for months."

“My only complaint? My fiancé is absolutely terrified of me when I wear it — but for skin this good, I don’t really care.”

Is the blue or pink Biodance mask better?

Both versions of the Biodance mask are designed to hydrate the skin, but they target slightly different concerns.

The pink collagen mask focuses more on improving the appearance of elasticity and firmness, making it a good option if your main goal is achieving that bouncy, plump skin effect. The blue version, meanwhile, leans more towards soothing and barrier support, which may make it a better choice for anyone dealing with dryness, redness or sensitivity.

In reality, both deliver a similar boost of hydration, so the best option largely comes down to what your skin needs most at the time.

The verdict: is the Biodance collagen face mask worth it?

If you’re looking for a mask that delivers serious hydration and gives a subtle plumping effect, the Biodance collagen mask is well worth trying – especially if you love the dewy, glass-skin finish Korean skincare is known for.

The three-hour wear time means it’s not something you’ll reach for every day, but when skin is looking tired, dull or dehydrated, it’s a low-effort way to give it a noticeable boost. The results aren’t permanent, but the glow is impressive enough that it’s easy to see why these masks have developed such a loyal following.
