Becky Hill has hit back at body-shaming trolls who came for her after her performance at the Euro 2022 final. The singer was criticised for wearing a sequin silver leotard to perform on the pitch ahead of the final, which saw the Lionesses historic 2-1 victory over Germany.
Yes, sadly but perhaps unsurprisingly, on a day which was supposed to be about celebrating women's athleticism and championing equality in the sporting industry, some people were instead more focused on reducing a woman to her body parts.
Most of the sexualised comments have now been removed, with Becky responding to one tweet telling her “you don't always have to dress up.”
She said: “women are ALWAYS expected to dress up. what was i supposed to do? go on in my trackies?”
Responding to another now-deleted tweet, in which the commenter seemingly apologised, Becky tweeted: “yep, very rude, but thanks for your apology. i’m also sorry you think that what i was wearing devalued my talent & wanted me to be more covered up to be a role model for body confidence to young women. as you can read, that is an oxymoron.”

Sharing a tweet from a supportive fan, Becky said: "be proud of your bodies! celebrate yourselves! show off your curves! cover up for no one & be confident! took me a long time to learn that & i wish i had role models like that growing up! thanks for having me today @Lionesses you’re doing us proud".

Later, Becky shared an update on Twitter: “i’ve spent most part of today feeling shit & had a little cry about how incredible the women’s football was yesterday & how sad that people devalued my worth as a performer because of what i wore. anyway. i’m done now for my own mental health.”

Becky's performance has also been widely commended, with many praising her for championing female empowerment alongside Stefflon Don and Ultra Nate.
Becky also added that it “was an absolute honour” to perform at Wembley Stadium, and praised the Lionesses historic achievement: “what an incredible result for the @Lionesses today. i’m so proud to be a woman, i’m so proud to be living through history. im honoured to have opened up that incredible match today. thank you thank you thank you. ITS HOME GIRLS!!!!!”.
We applaud Becky Hill for speaking up against such sexist trolling, and reminding the world that commenting on a woman's body is never acceptable.
