Warning: Spoilers ahead for season 2 of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.

Wow, we need to talk about that ending of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder season two. Our nosy girl was back with her head in a new case, this time the disappearance of Jamie Reynolds. Pip was asked to help find her friend Connor’s brother and was dismayed by the lack of support from the police. Little did she know this would become her deadliest case yet.

Alongside this, the season also included Max’s trial for rape, and the unresolved tension between Pip and her friend Cara, after her investigation landed him in jail.

Buckle up, as this was a crazier ride than Netflix documentaries like Should I Marry a Murderer or Worst Ex Ever. Let's unpack the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder season two ending.

Who took Jamie and why?

This season’s mystery centred on the disappearance of Connor’s brother, Jamie. Pip gets involved when the police refuse to take the case seriously. Not only is she determined to rescue Jamie, but she also believes he is key to Max’s trial (more on that to come).

Jamie is catfished by a mysterious “girl” named “Layla”, who has been targeting several men in the area, all around the age of 28. The profile uses Ruby Foxcroft’s image, with the hair digitally altered to blonde. As it turns out, Jamie lies about his age, claiming to be 28, and when he is exposed, Layla loses interest in him as a romantic prospect, but continues to use him to run errands, including trying to track down a specific 28-year-old. Mysterious.

It’s eventually revealed that Layla is searching for a man once known as “Child Brunswick,” who, as a child, was forced by his serial killer father, Scott Brunswick, to lure unsuspecting children into his father’s deadly trap. After the murders and his father’s arrest years ago, “Child Brunswick” has been forced to move from town to town under new identities, constantly on the run and attempting to disappear.

Jamie inadvertently gets too close to “Child Brunswick”, who panics and takes him hostage. He doesn’t intend to hurt him, he is simply terrified and believes Jamie might be a threat to his safety.

Who is “Child Brunswick”?

Who is the mysterious “Child Brunswick”? The publicly unnamed son of infamous serial killer Scott Brunswick was forced to help his father find and lure victims from the age of nine or ten.

He lived in constant fear for his life, but also harboured deep hatred for his father. Eventually, he became a key witness against him in court. Following the crimes, he served a custodial sentence in juvenile detention, where he was later rehabilitated. At 18, he was released on lifelong parole under a new identity. Because he was a child at the time of the offences, his real name — Jack — was never made public, and he was granted permanent protection from identification for his safety.

Through Pip’s sleuthing and an old photograph of his father (who is later revealed to have been killed in prison), she ultimately discovers that “Child Brunswick” is Stanley (Misia Butler), the security guard at the golf club. He keeps Jamie in a water closet during his captivity. Over the week Jamie is missing, the two actually form an unlikely bond, with Stanley sharing his story and explaining his situation. He knows someone is looking for him and that his life is in danger.

Despite his fear, Stanley Forbes shows real compassion and humanity. He continues to care for Jamie in captivity, cooking for him and providing clothes and bedding. The two gradually bond, even becoming friends, and begin planning to work together to uncover Layla Mead, after which Stanley promises to let Jamie go.

Who is “Layla”?

Okay, that's one mysterious individual solved, now for the next: who is Layla, and why does she want “Child Brunswick,” aka Stanley?

Layla is actually Charlie Green (Jack Rowan), the seemingly friendly new neighbour. As a child, Charlie witnessed Scott Brunswick’s son helping to lure victims for his serial killer father — including Charlie’s twin sister, who became one of those victims. Charlie has spent years obsessed with finding the child accomplice, who was given a new identity and hidden from the public.

Charlie believes the former “Child Brunswick” is living in Little Kilton under a new name. He moves from town to town, using the dating profile to investigate all the men in each area. Through the “Layla” persona, he manipulates Jamie into helping him track the person down. Jamie initially believes he is helping a woman online, but after realising the truth, he confronts the wrong suspect: Stanley.

That’s when Stanley takes him hostage, and the two slowly, unexpectedly, become something close to friends.

What happens to Stanley?

Pip meets with Stanley, who explains the entire misunderstanding to her and confirms that Jamie is alive, but they are followed by Charlie. Charlie ultimately shoots Stanley in front of Pip after deciding the justice system will never properly punish him.

Stanley dies in Pip’s arms after she tries her best to save him, dragging him out of the building after Charlie sets the place on fire. She is left deeply shaken, questioning whether justice actually exists at all.

Pip organises a funeral for him and asks her loved ones to attend, but the ceremony is interrupted by the discovery of a malicious graffiti message on a nearby building reading, “Child killer burn in hell Child Brunswick.”

Following Stanley’s death, Jamie is given a second chance, rediscovering his passion for music and beginning a new relationship with Nat.

What happens to Max Hastings?

Bit of a detour now, but let’s talk about another major storyline in season two of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder: Max Hastings’ trial.

In season one, while investigating the murder of Andie Bell, Pip discovered that Max (Henry Ashton) had been drugging and sexually assaulting women. In season two, he is finally on trial for those assaults. Pip is determined to bring him down, but as always, it’s far from simple.

Becca Bell (Carla Woodcock), who is incarcerated for her sister’s murder, ultimately agrees to testify against him after initially refusing, believing powerful men like Max always escape consequences. Other girls, including Nat (Jessica Webber), Jamie’s best friend and crush, come forward with their own accounts of being drugged and assaulted. Pip also has a recorded confession from Max in which he threatens her and her friends. Jamie’s testimony — about seeing Max leave a room after assaulting Nat — becomes crucial to the case.

As the investigation into Jamie’s disappearance unfolds, Max grows increasingly desperate. He threatens witnesses, manipulates those around him, and even pressures his cousin Robin (Freddie England) into spying on Pip. He blackmails Stanley into creating a fake CCTV alibi, placing Max at the golf club the night Jamie vanishes. It is also later revealed that Max has Ravi (Zain Iqbal) fired from his internship in retaliation against Pip. At one point, Max even tries to deflect blame onto his dead best friend, Sal Singh.

Despite all of this, the court ultimately finds Max not guilty. Without Jamie’s testimony, there is simply not enough evidence. The verdict devastates Pip, Nat, Becca, and the other victims. Pip completely unravels emotionally afterwards, lashing out at Robin and struggling to accept that someone like Max can walk free.

One of the season’s key turning points comes when Max’s own mother (Annabel Mullion) realises he is guilty after discovering hidden pills connected to the assaults. She confronts him directly and tells him he has become her “worst nightmare.”

In the aftermath, Pip takes justice into her own hands by releasing Max’s recorded confession on her podcast, destroying his reputation. She also breaks a window at his house and spray-paints the message “Rapist I will get you” on his door in red.

Who is threatening Pip?

By the end of season two of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, almost all of our mysteries are solved, except for who has been threatening Pip. Pip initially doesn’t take the warnings seriously, assuming they’re connected to Max Hastings and Jamie Reynolds.

However, the finale makes it clear that the “Who will look for you when you’re the one who disappears?” messages are far more serious than she realised. Someone breaks into her room, and her computer is found with the question typed over and over again. If Netflix renews the show, season three will need to reveal who is threatening Pip and what they want.

Season three is also set to explore Pip’s increasingly dark outlook, as she loses faith in both the police and the justice system. Not only did authorities ignore her suspicions about Andie Bell and Sal Singh in season one, but they also dismissed her warnings about Jamie — ultimately contributing to Stanley’s death. On top of that, Max walks away from his trial unscathed. She is understandably furious, and is now dealing with PTSD as a result.
