If, like us, you were quietly (read: very loudly) obsessed with the The Idea of You, then boy do we have a great film for you to watch tonight.
Imagine if your single mother dated the hottest star in America. While this is the premise of The Idea of You, it is also the basis of A Family Affair, a new rom-com that has just been released on Netflix.
And before you even start, let’s be so real and admit that it’s okay to have a formulaic setup —both of these movies are essentially age-gap versions of Notting Hill anyway.
A Family Affair stars Zac Efron as self-absorbed movie star Chris Cole, Joey King as his assistant Zara Ford, and Nicole Kidman as King’s mom Brooke Harwood, who starts an unexpected romance with Cole. Kathy Bates and Liza Koshy costar as Zara’s grandma Leila Ford and Zara’s bestie Eugenie, respectively.
Over on X (formerly Twitter), everyone has been saying the same thing about the film. “A Family Affair is a bop omg!!! Thought the casting was weird but it really worked well,” one user wrote, while another added: “A Family Affair is so good... Zac Efron what can I say OMG.”
We’re not sure how steamy this movie gets (it’s rated PG for “sexual content, partial nudity and some strong language”), but it might interest you to recall that Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron have in fact already filmed intimate scenes together.
They costarred in 2012’s The Paperboy, which isn’t super explicit, but their characters do hook up. (Be warned: This movie is weird AF. But Macy Gray’s in it, so that’s cool.)
"I’m still so enamoured with Nicole," Efron told PEOPLE. “There’s a part of me that pinches myself when I realise who I’m working with a lot. I think that was more pronounced during The Paperboy because I was a lot younger. I was very nervous back then.”

“You’re not Jack and Rose, just get out of the car!” is so good…
“A Family Affair official poster. All I can say is…it’s the love story you never knew you needed 💋,” King wrote on Instagram to promote the project. Actually, I know I need this, Joey! If it makes fun of celebrities, validates an older woman’s sexuality, and has Kathy Bates? I know I need that.
A Family Affair premiered on Netflix on 28 June.
