S/S 09 Beauty Trends

The spring/summer 2009 shows were a thing of contrast - Hollywood era hair sat alongside science fiction sunnies, and vivid colour-blocked dresses vied for attention next to an alternatively soft palette of nudes and peaches. So, make-up bags and hairspray at the ready, because from colour-popping eyes to rock'n'roll fringes, GLAMOUR.com has lined up all the biggest, best and most exciting looks for the new season.

Colour Clash
Flamingo pinks, corals, turquoises, lilacs and fuchsias – if there’s one thing that we’re getting excited about for spring, it’s the wash of eye-popping colours that we saw on models walking the season’s runways. It’s a trend that the A-list have already been working to perfection, and was seen in the form of futuristic fuchsia lips at Hussein Chalayan, bold and dramatic flashes of electric blue shadow at Gucci and rainbow colours on lids, cheekbones and T-zones at Jonathan Saunders and John Galliano (pictured).

Neo Pretty
“It’s about looking healthy, fresh and luminous,” make-up artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath said of spring/summer 2009’s trend for rosy, flushed looks and high tech radiance. Delicate pink glows adorned the cheeks of models at Lanvin and Anna Sui, while the beautifully natural and fresh looks at Nathan Jenden and Alessando Dell’Acqua were enhanced with layers upon layers of gloss to create a wet look finish and a modern, sci-fi twist – keeping this trend romantic, sexy and, most of all, wearable.

Return Of The Lip
Bright and beautiful were the buzzwords for lips for spring/summer 2009, and thankfully this is one trend that doesn’t take too much effort to pull off. “A little girl who’s raided her mother’s make-up,” was the inspiration for this style, claimed MAC make-up artist Inge Grognard, so for an intense, eye-catching effect, make-up artists used a host of colours and textures; girls at Nina Ricci modelled a tie-dye, crimson effect on their mouths, at Louis Vuitton the look was an Eighties-inspired glossy red effect and at Proenza Schouler (pictured) the pouts were the perfect shade of scarlet.

Angel Dust
Metallics always make a comeback for the summer months, and although they didn’t technically go away last season (remember Chanel’s gorgeous golden eyes for autumn/winter 2009-10?), this time around, the key to the whole effect is super-soft, almost angelic hints of the palest silvers and iridescent pinks and lilacs. At Giorgio Armani, Kenzo and Behnaz Sarafpour, silver shades were worked over the lid and into the corners of the eyes, for a pretty, carefree and dishevelled finish. Pair your gilt edges with lip gloss and dewy skin for a romantic summer evening look.

Purple Rain
Beauty was on a colour roll at the spring/summer 2009 shows, and while some make-up artists were getting slap happy with acid brights, others also gave purples and blues in ethereal shades of lilac, lavender, duck egg and pale aqua a noteworthy outing. The pretty shades weren’t confined to the eyes either – both Modernist and Zac Posen (pictured) had their models showing off an über-kissable, metallic purple lip, while at Aquascutum Charlotte Tilbury went for purple haze with thick lines of glossy iris right up to the eye socket, and Val Garland created a “Nordic, frosty, Icelandic,” look with shimmering shades of the palest blue at Louise Goldin.
Plaits And Ponies
It’s official – the braid is back. Having been around for a few seasons already, the plait (and its humble cousin, the ponytail) was the up-do of choice for many designers for spring/summer 2009. But don’t be fooled by this casual summer look – this spring’s plaits and ponies are super-pretty, dressy and elegant. Keep the look fresh and contemporary (and totally on-trend) by incorporating subtle, intricate details, like the Heidi-style bands of hair at Celine, and make sure ponies are polished, neat and minimalist as seen at Versace. To put a fashion foot further forward, make like the girls at Erdem in long, loose fishtail plaits.

Rock The Look
From heavy, thick-cut Marianne Faithfull-style fringes at L’Wren Scott, to the kinky, dishevelled styles seen at Anna Sui (pictured), spring hair seems to be embracing rock’n’roll all over again. Whilst autumn/winter 2009-10’s influence might have been the quasi-polish of the glam rock era, we’re looking right back to rock’s summer of love heyday this season – ditch the fussy straightened looks and tease, pull and frizz your locks for some ‘just got rolled out of bed’, rock goddess texture. Pair with a carefully constructed, contemporary flick of black liner (as seen at Lanvin) for the ultimate take on spring chic.

Lady’s Day
It’s time to embrace your inner Hollywood starlet, because another defining trend for hair this spring was a move towards, “more sophisticated, ladylike up-dos,” said the experts at Daniel Hersheson – which is good news if the Kate Moss bedhead look isn’t exactly your cup of tea. Contemporised versions of the traditional 1940s-inspired chignons, rolls, pleats and the classic bun cropped up at Chanel, Marni and Carolina Herrera, giving a high society finish, while models at Yves Saint Laurent (pictured) wore Park Avenue princess ultra-high hair-ups, held in place with black slides for glamorous and feminine chic.
