Short trench coats are this season's proof that the re-workings of classic staples oftentimes become more popular than their original counterparts. We've waxed lyrical about the full-length trench coat for years – justifiably so – but for SS26, luxury and high-street design wizards are taking to the lengths with their scissors. Double or single-breasted, they boast all the features of the classic longline trench coat – which evolved from the 1940s onwards to become a shortcut for spy-chic as well as a hallmark of classic grown-up glamour (thanks to Hollywood icons Audrey Hepburn and Katherine Hepburn). Think: wide lapels, cuffed wrists, waist belts and contrasting buttons. They're just, well, shorter.

How to style a cropped trench coat:

The short answer? The same as you would any other spring jacket. As is the case with their longer sisters, there are endless styling possibilities. Often cut to serve a cinched-waist silhouette, though, short trenches look particularly good with a classic white t-shirt and straight leg jeans. Lightweight knits, denim midi skirts, white jeans and joggers all make for perfect companions, too.
