Step one: drawing up a list of must-haves and must-have-nots, which included:

- Space for eight or more guests — and no rooms crammed full of rattling metal bunk beds
- Generous spaces built for hosting — we're talking kitchens with at least two ovens, plenty of chairs and a huge island
- Outdoor space — enough for thre DIY sports day of your friend's dreams

Why we love it: This is a grand, stylish and fun family home across three floors, with a full-size football table, a hot tub and a retro cinema — we're talking an 85-inch TV, Sky and Sonos Arc.
