How Miu Miu became Gen Z’s most coveted fashion brand
Who really sets the trends that take over our wardrobes? Just recently, who sent us all into a toy craze over bag charms? That would be Miu Miu. Who revived ballet flats of all shoes and disrupted the quiet luxury movement that felt like the forever pinnacle to effortless dressing? Miu Miu again. According to Prada’s rebellious little sister., what women really wanted was charms, trinkets, paracords, teddy bears, and nostalgic souvenirs. And just like that, the bag charm phenomenon was born. If we know one thing, it’s that everyone wants to be a Miu Miu girl (or boy).
Miu Miu was born in 1992 and made its public debut in 1993 - she's a Millennial girl but grew up alongside the internet so she knows exactly what Gen Z crave. Designed as the playful counterpart to Prada, Miuccia Prada used the brand as a creative playground, a space to contrast the minimalist, refined aesthetic of Prada with something more rebellious and free-spirited. In recent years alone Miu Miu has influenced our global obsession with not only bag charms but ballet flats, uber-mini skirts, ‘it’ bags, underwear-as-outerwear, and athleisure. Wondering why the rugby polo has become a wardrobe essential ? Well, that’s Miu Miu’s influence, too.
According to Lyst's latest report, Miu Miu remains the world’s hottest brand and the standout winner of 2024. Part of its explosive success over the past few years has been credited to the recruitment of ex-Balenciaga stylist Lotta Volkova, who joined in 2021. Her collaborations with Miuccia Prada have resulted in viral styling moments, from underwear as outerwear to reviving basic cardigans by tucking them into tights.

“Miu Miu has defied the luxury downturn, raising the brand heat bar and creating trophy items quarter after quarter,” says Katy Lubin, VP of Brand & Communications at Lyst.
Much of the brand’s enduring appeal, however, can be attributed to Mrs Prada, who established Miu Miu long before Gen Z and Millennials became the driving force in fashion.
“Mrs Prada and her team have built and earned this success over many years… fashion fans appreciate a clear, consistent vision that is powerfully articulated by great, recognisable product,” Katy adds.
Now, with both generations leading trends and driving demand, Miu Miu has become one of the most coveted brands of the moment. Its ability to balance fashion’s ongoing obsession with nostalgia while embracing modernity, blending rebellion with elegance, has cemented its status as the ultimate cool-girl label, shaping the way we dress season after season.
What does it mean to be a Miu Miu Girl?
Being a Miu Miu girl isn’t really about being a girl at all, it’s an energy, playful attitude and fluidity that we all crave. It’s about being put together without looking like you tried. Some of the most iconic Miu Miu girls include Drew Barrymore in the ‘90s, starring in a campaign that remains a key fashion reference today. Then came Chloë Sevigny, the epitome of cool, whose individuality couldn’t quite be replicated but was admired worldwide.

Today’s Miu Miu girls bring their own spin to the brand but continue to keep its signature spirit alive. Elle Fanning has been a longtime muse, she carries Miu Miu’s princess-like elegance, fronting campaigns and closing the FW23 show in sheer, embellished layers. Sydney Sweeney, a brand ambassador, is rarely seen in anything else, making Miu Miu her second skin on red carpets and at fashion week making it all too easy to land on best-dressed lists. And Little Simz made her runway debut at Paris Fashion Week then went on to star in the AW24 campaign alongside Cara Delevingne, a vibrant addition to a brand that sees past fashion embracing music, art and cultural influence.

Miu Miu has mastered the art of turning everyday basics into something playful, sensual, and highly desirable. From best-seller poplin shirts with unfinished hems to logo tees that have become a Gen Z staple, the brand has a knack for taking something as simple as your grandma's skirt and turning it into a statement piece.
Some of its most iconic pieces include the viral SS22 micro mini skirt, which took over TikTok and magazine covers, and the AW22 satin ballet pumps, which sparked a global ballet flat revival. And then the New Balance 530 SL sneakers, a sold-out collaboration featuring both brands' logos, turning Miu Miu’s flirt with athleisure into authority in the footwear industry.
Even the brand’s cowgirl-inspired roots, seen in its first collection with prairie skirts and fringed jackets, continue to shape today’s designs, feeling as relevant as ever. The AW23 Sienna biker boot is a perfect example, a modern reinvention of a rugged classic with a western edge, which were in such demand that brands are still creating dupes till this day.
