The Alex Edit: I tried the cult luxury coat of the season, here's how to rock it this winter...
The coats to know about this Winter? Just go large.
The most on-trend styles are supersized and sportswear-influenced. Balenciaga, Prada and Calvin Klein called the shots with a mood of protection, underlined by the catwalk’s edgy trend of wearing two coats at a time for double the style. Whether you want to wrap yourself up against the weather or the world, whatever you choose, a quilted puffer style is this season’s saviour.
Ten years ago, Max Mara debuted their Cube coat - a super-light, padded coat that manages to be sporty and boujee at the same time. This season it’s had a little update to celebrate its anniversary. (And why shouldn’t a coat get a birthday party? After all, the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York named the Cube one of their ‘cult objects.’)
While Max Mara’s classic camel wool overcoat is a legend in elegant dressing - it’s on my shopping wishlist for when I grow up… the Italian design house has been working hard on innovation and technology, as well as keeping up with everything design and trend-led. This is where La Superleggera is the leader of the (wool)pack. Padded with premium down feathers, the coat has more in common with a cashmere crew neck than a weighty winter coat. But it still packs a punch when it comes to keeping cosy.
Here’s the science bit: made from ultra-weight, extra-tough, 7 denier nylon, the outer layer is super-fine, flexible and waterproof. Filled with 128grams of feather clusters per square metre, the coat is toasty but still light. The dressing gown wrap-around styling makes it versatile, too. You could wear it up a mountain or on a protest march, as well as making it your daily commuting coat. Each Superleggera comes with the cutest cube-shaped travel box so you can slip it off if you’re on the tube, tuck it into its pouch and not overheat OR take up too much space.

The tenth anniversary version comes in black - and is reversible - and each season there are extra elements you can shop for to truly customise your coat. If you fancy it, there are cuffs, collars or jewelled trims that can be added to the base.
The length might feel scarier than a cropped puffer jacket but look to Hailey Baldwin and Bella Hadid for inspiration on how to wear a longline padded coat. Amp up the sports styling by wearing a sweatshirt layered with a polo neck underneath. High-waisted, pale-wash jeans have the right amount of Nineties Mom about them, without making your outfit feel 'Mum on the School Run' (my biggest fear with a quilted cover-up.) Pastel tones and flashes of neon will add even more edge and finish off with a tiny cross body bag and trainers.
The more your coat slips off your shoulders, the cooler it looks and likely will be - because, still in mum mode, you’ll catch a cold if you don’t put your coat on properly but hell, you’ll look hot.
