40 Years of Kate Moss
Discovered as teen by Storm Models’ Sarah Doukas in 1988, Croydon-born Kate Moss may still have been growing into her looks, but she definitely had undeniable model potential.
Despite her 5’7” height (tiny for a model), her 1992 campaign for Calvin Klein launched Kate straight into supermodel territory. The saucy ads led to Kate’s contract being renewed for CK’s perfume Obsession.
Kate was at the forefront of the ‘Heroin Chic’ scandal of the 1990s, with her skinny frame being a stark contrast to the voluptuous shapes of Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell. Despite allegations, Kate has always denied suffering from eating disorders.
In 1994, Kate’s skyrocketing modelling career marked herself and her then-boyfriend, Johnny Depp, as one of the hottest couples of the decade. They split after four years, much to the chagrin of newspaper editors.
WennIn 2002, the model’s relationship with Dazed & Confused editor Jefferson Hack resulted in the birth of her daughter Lila Grace. She might still be young, but Lila is already showing signs of being as fashionable (and gorgeous) as her mum!
Kate dated ex-Libertines and Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty, and the pair quickly became tabloid favourites. After months (and months) of on-again, off-again dating, their tumultuous relationship came to an end in 2007.
Kate’s rock chick status was cemented by her duets with Doherty’s band Babyshambles, and performances with veteran rockers Primal Scream. She also famously impressed us by pole-dancing in the White Stripes video, I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself.
In September 2005, pictures of the model reportedly snorting cocaine shocked the world. But Kate was quick to amend the situation, with a successful stint in rehab and some quality time with her family putting her back on track.
Never one to let a little scandal get in the way of things, Kate’s post-rehab comeback was a return to form, with 16 campaigns booked in 2006, including Burberry, Dior and Rimmel.
The British Fashion Council awarded Kate with the prestigious Model Of The Year Award in late 2006. She is reportedly the second-highest-earning model in the world (behind Gisele Bundchen).
In 2006 Kate indulged in a little light relief by collaborating with friends Matt Lucas and David Walliams as Vicky Pollard’s sister Katie in a special Comic Relief edition of Little Britain.
She came, she saw, she conquered the high street. Kate’s first collection for Topshop in 2007 was a near-sellout, with items being posted on eBay just hours after being put on sale.
Kate started dating The Kills’ frontman Jamie Hince in 2007 - was this the rocker to tame La Moss?

Kate has a charitable side too. The model read out paragraphs from Fifty Shades of Grey to help raise money for Comic Relief.
