Blair Waldof (Leighton Meester) might look like a pretty face but Queen B is the Upper East Side’s chief schemer. Stab her in the back and she’ll come right back at you.
Serena Van Der Woodsen (Blake Lively) is the “It Girl” of the exclusive Constance Billard School for Girls. She’s incredibly rich and beautiful but these just lead her into all sorts of trouble – usually involving alcohol and/or unsuitable men. But she is trying to mend her ways!
The resident heartthrob, Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) has been romantically linked to Serena, Blair, Jenny and Vanessa in some way or other over the show’s two series.
Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) is the show’s anti-hero. He’s a womanizer, heavy drinker and general immoralist, stirring up trouble where he can and manipulating everyone around him so he gets his own way.
Unlike the majority of the show’s characters Dan Humphrey, or “Lonely Boy” as Gossip Girl refers to him, doesn’t live in the exclusive Upper East Side but in a loft in Brooklyn. Dan has a relationship with Serena that’s more off than on.
Dan’s little sister, Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen), is an aspiring designer whose talent and wilfulness continually put her at odds with family and friends.
Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr) is a budding film-maker and Dan’s childhood best friend. She’s painfully sensible and needs to lighten up (in our humble opinion!)
Lily Van Der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford) is a New York socialite and Serena’s mother. She might only date billionaires, but in her youth, she had a fling with Rufus Humphrey, Dan’s guitarist father.
During an internship with Blair’s mother, fashion designer Eleanor Waldorf, Jenny Humphrey meets daredevil model Agnes Andrews (Willa Holland) who starts to lead her astray.
They’ve known each other since kindergarten but that doesn’t stop the rivalry between best frenemies Serena and Blair. Two contrasting personalities and their constant battle to be top dog regularly puts a strain on their relationship.
And this is what Blair and Serena battle it out for – the adoration of their little clique of socialite friends. Handbags at the ready!
What do you do when you live in NY, have billions to spend and apparently no homework? Lots of shopping.
Then there’s the parties. About one an episode and they never really go to plan.
One other reason to watch Gossip Girl – the fashion. Who cares if she’s a complete b***h, Blair’s style is prim, polished and perfectly coordinated.
Serena, meanwhile, dresses with a whole lot of sass. Ultra mini-skirts, knee-high boots and revealing tops make up the majority of her wardrobe.
Jenny can afford to be much more experimental with her fashion – she is a wannabe designer after all! Expect statement pieces and curious accessories from this little lady.
