But it was at the tender age of six that Drew stepped out of the shadows of her dynastic acting family and landed the role of Elliot’s little sister, Gertie, in E.T. immediately hurling little Drew into the big time.

However, by the time she was 9, the dark side of fame was threatening to overshadow little Drew’s life and the actress was already a regular at Studio 54 where she was often seen smoking.

With her hard-partying ways a hot topic in the press, things came to a dramatic head that year with Drew checking into rehab aged 14 before spending three months at the home of David Crosby where he and his wife helped Drew back on the road to sobriety.

By 1991 though, a sixteen-year-old Drew had successfully fought for emancipation from her parents in the courts, was living by herself and was engaged to Leland Hayward.

However, the engagement was broken off in the same year.

The following year though and Drew was loved up again, settling down with musician and actor, Jamie Walters.

During their time together, the two famously posed nude for a magazine.

But her romance with Jamie Walters was not to last and in 1994 aged nineteen, Drew fell into the arms of Welsh bartender Jeremy Thomas - and the two were promptly married. However, it wasn't to be and the pair divorced just under two months later.

But Drew's wild streak was still there and just shy of turning 20, Barrymore posed nude for Playboy magazine. According to Hollywood legend, after the magazine had been published, her godfather Steven Spielberg gifted her with a quilt on her birthday, alongside a note reading: "Cover yourself up."

But 1995 was set to be turning a point for Drew with the actress returning to films with acclaimed cameos in horror Scream and Batman Forever.

Come the late 90s though and Drew was successfully carving a new niche for herself as the go-to rom-com lead and even took a more dramatic role in Ever After, the period costume fairy tale based on Cinderella.

But it was really the The Wedding Singer which cemented her comeback hard and fast whilst it was also her first collaboration with three-time co-star Adam Sandler.

Proving that she well and truly had her head screwed on though, Drew set up her own production company, Flower Films. Their first investment? Why, only that little teen comedy, Never Been Kissed!

The company then went on to produce the big-budget film remake of hit 70s show, Charlie's Angels. Teaming up with Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu, the acting three proved to be dynamite at the box office.

Meanwhile, Drew's personal life was also going from strength-to-strength. After meeting in 1999, Drew began a relationship with MTV comedian Tom Green and the two tied the knot in 2001 with Tom even making an appearance in Charlie's Angels.

But dramatic roles also followed and Barrymore drew widespread critical acclaim in Riding In Cars With Boys playing the role of a teenage mother with a drug-addicted husband.

2001 also saw Drew's production company Flower Films step in to save movie Donnie Darko which had hit funding issues and was in danger of not being made. Although the movie didn't perform as well as hoped at the box office, the science-fiction drama has since garnered a huge cult fan base.

Riding high off the success of the first outing, the Charlie's Angels trio returned for a second outing in 2003. However, just the year before Drew and Tom called time on their marriage and she was single again.

But in 2002, Drew met The Strokes' Fabrizio Moretti and the two pretty much became our fave celeb couple in an instant. The two stayed together for five years before splitting up in 2007.

In 2008 though, Drew's heart was mended by new love Justin Long. Despite an on-off relationship, the acting pair were together until mid-2010.

Things were all set to change for Drew in 2011 though when she met art dealer Will Kopelman. The two were quickly inseparable and the two announced their engagement in January 2012 before tying the knot that summer.

And soon along came the couple's first child when Barrymore gave birth to their daughter Olive Barrymore Kopelman on 26 September.
