Drew Barrymore's hair: A love letter.

Drew Barrymore's hair. Is there a hit squad of hairdressers and stylists trailing around her flashing new trends, balayage colour charts hairdryers, tongs and spray to curtail the slightest hair, quite literally out of place? Or, is she one of those women who just have bloody amazing hair? Like SJP – we think it’s the latter. She’s grown up before our eyes in the movies since she was 8 years old, and while her life has been something of a roller-coaster, her hair, we maintain has always kept its cool. So let’s look back at over 30 years of Drew’s style, from short to long, black, brown, red and blonde, curly and straight and of course the colour trend she quite simply owns, balayage (which she is rocking in Netflix's new zom-com series, Santa Clarita Diet). So - Drew's hair - this is for you.

Those pigtails! Drew was just about the cutest little girl EVER when she starred in E.T
Rex Features1985
At just ten years old, Drew Blyth Barrymore was already a Hollywood household name after starring in E.T. Cute, natural blonde hair, like any 10 year-old should have.
Rex Features1987
The teenage years see Drew sporting an 80s classic - the curly high ponytail, with a slight quiff at the front. Back then, this was very cool.
Rex Features1990
By fifteen emancipated from her Hollywood heavyweight parents and moved into her own apartment. Her hair goes super blonde - maybe a touch of the grunge kicking in.
Rex Features1994
Rocking the ‘90s grunge/hippie chic – eighteen-year-old Drew was becoming a (legal) regular on the LA party scene and notorious ‘wild child’. This particular look reminds us of Madonna's early 90s foray into super short blonde hair.
Rex Features1995
By the following year, Drew was an all-out Goth girl, with a raven black crop and heavily powdered, milky white skin.
Rex Features1996
Flaunting her ‘bad girl’ credentials with 90s queen of grunge Courtney Love – and looking dare we say pretty darn cool with her black satin prom dress, platinum bob, Goth girl make-up and conflicting, cutesy, daisy hair accessories. LOVE that hair.
Rex Features1998
A new Drew. Still loving those daisy hair slides but becoming more of a glossy, polished starlet than a red carpet rebel. By this point, Drew had made a successful Hollywood comeback following years of her personal life making the headlines more than her acting. A cameo in teen horror flick Scream was followed by a starring role in hugely successful rom-com The Wedding Singer and, bang, Barrymore was ‘bankable’ again.
Rex Features1999
Looking like butter wouldn’t melt on the red carpet with soft curls and natural make-up, Drew was by now in the producing game – the co-founder of Hollywood production company, Flower Films – and in the process of funding a big-screen remake of 70s show Charlie’s Angels…
Rex Features2000
With her on-trend copper waves, red lips and California tan, Drew was the critics’ darling once again. Charlie’s Angel became a HUGE box office success and suddenly the former wild child was one of Hollywood’s biggest players. Go, Drew!
Rex Features2001
Wowing with rich auburn locks and bold, blue mascara on the red carpet, Drew’s career was on the up but her love-life was still troubled. In July this year, she married oddball comedian and Charlie’s Angels co-star Tom Green, only to split five months later, making her a double-divorcee at 26.
Rex Features2002
Following a role in cult flick, Donnie Darko, which her company produced, Drew reprised her role as ass-kicking Dylan Sanders for Charlie’s Angels 2: Full Throttle. Now embracing her natural curls and colour, Drew was rocking red carpets with carefully dishevelled locks and edgy, smoky eyes.
Rex Features2003
Never the wallflower, we love that Drew isn’t afraid to break the rules when it comes to her style. Now looking to the catwalks for inspiration, Drew showed off her new lengthy blonde waves and this too-cool explosion of sunny yellow eyeshadow at the Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle press conference.
Rex Features2003
Wowing on the red carpet at the LA premiere of Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Drew went rock chic with tousled locks and edgy, heavy-kohled eyes. And why not? The starlet was by now a fully fledged rock chick, in the first flushes of love with hot Strokes’ drummer Fabrizio Moretti.
Rex Features2003
Still looking to the catwalks for beauty inspiration, Drew boldly sported ethereal splashes of white shadow across her eyes, temples and hairline for a Hollywood event.
Rex Features2005
Rocking the front row at Marc Jacobs for Fashion Week with body-beautiful, tousled tresses, on-trend metallic shadow and bags of attitude.
Rex Features2005
Trying out rich, chocolaty brunette for the first time, Drew looked stunning at the 2005 Oscars ceremony with a body-beautiful up-do, porcelain skin and smoky eyes.

Sporting gorgeous copper-red waves and rosebud cheeks, the starlet looked relaxed and blissfully happy on the arm of her new beau and He’s Just Not That Into You co-star, the equally cute Justin Long.

BOOM. Dividing the critics at the Golden Globes ceremony with BIG hair and the ‘80s-inspired make-up combo of icy blue shadow and pink lips. At least you can always rely on Drew to break the red carpet norm.

Rex Features2009
Could she be any cooler? Drew rocks retro at a Hollywood party with a 20s-style, pin-curled bob, ruby red lips and a beaded, floral/veil accessory for a New York event.
Rex Features2009
Teased and tousled locks with rock-chick body, secured with an on-trend feathered accessory and teamed with denim blue eyeshadow – 2009 was officially the year that Drew reignited our style crush – fact.
Rex Features2009
Clearly watching those catwalks closely, Drew teamed on-trend black kohled eyes with bubblegum pink lipgloss and two-tone ‘dipped’ hair for the Whip It premier – her directorial debut. The look’s not for everyone, but we applaud her boldness once more.
Rex Features2009
Peachy pink perfection! Drew amped up the high-octane glamour for the Emmy Awards with dreamy skin, coral lips and her red carpet do du jour.
