Homespun and handmade: How artisan pieces and crafty details became the fash-pack's favourite trend for Autumn
If it looks like you made it yourself, this Autumn’s message is: wear it. Some of the biggest catwalk brands majored on crafty details, artisan-inspired pieces and a distinctly homespun vibe for AW 2021. Patchwork, tassels, hand-knit jumpers, quilted florals and crochet are key elements of the trend, combined with a mash-up of print and patterns for an eclectic vibe that your feed will soon be full of (if it isn’t already.)

The absolute opposite of clean minimalism and the beige aesthetic, this trend is all about authenticity and celebrating the skills of crafters. Even if it’s something you bought off ASOS (ahem) it should still look like you could've picked up your own knitting needles. If you wanted to, of course. Taking a step on from Summer’s pretty cottagecore moment, this movement also echoes every TikToker’s obsession with genuinely crafty looking pieces and DIY fashion.

It also has serious industry approval. Net-a-porter.com have bought heavily into the trend, which they named ‘Artisanal Eclecticism’ at their biannual trend talk. But, how should you wear all those disparate elements? We found some glorious inspiration on Instagram, obvs.

So, we get it. It’s got to be colourful, textured and bold. It’s not the sort of trend that you could wear just one statement piece from. More is more. Pile all your crafty pieces on together then add colourful beaded jewellery and finish with a pair of clogs. Try a Fair Isle tank top – like Molly Goddard’s – over a cotton shirt with Preen’s patchwork skirt. It doesn't all have to be designer though... The high street have fallen for the trend too. Layer Mango's ditsy floral quilted jacket over a crochet blouse (we love this version from Topshop) and a pair of high waisted jeans. And if anyone asks, of course you made it yourself!
