I’m a fashion director and this is why I'm obsessed with clogs (hear me out)
I’ve worn clogs since I was tiny. My mum clacked around in clogs (and hand-crocheted tops and the perfect love-worn wide-leg high-waisted jeans... where are they now?) As soon as I could walk, I was clip-clopping in clogs too. Sweet red patent ones and a miniature navy pair are stuck in my memories. Today, clogs are my everyday go-to for off-duty wear. I have a pair of clogs by the back door, ready to slip into for pottering round the garden or nipping out for milk.
That’s the back door, mind. Clogs are such personal footwear for me. They’re what I wear at home. They’re not the sort of shoes I’d wear in my work life as a fashion director... Sitting in the frow at catwalk shows, meeting fashion designers, lunching in Mayfair... Smart loafers or kitten heels are a must. Except now, clogs have had a high-fashion make-over and I’m making the move to wear clogs in my professional life. Net-a-porter revealed that they are one of their key shoe buys of the season and the high street has cottoned on too.

But how come clogs are having a thing now? Quintessentially Seventies, we’ve seen clog revivals and catwalk appearances before. Basically, post-lockdowns, clogs offer the perfect way to walk back into the real world after slopping around in slippers. They’re easy to wear. They have a relaxed, bohemian vibe while still feeling more shoe-like than a trainer.
Crocs are obviously a version of the classic clog and there’s no denying it’s been a Crocs girl summer. There are several styles of minimal leather mule too, ideal if you’re into the pared-back aesthetic. But the clogs that are stealing the spotlight are more rustic. With studs around the base and wooden soles, it’s no coincidence that the explosion of cottagecore and the return of clogs have gone hand in hand.

Shoe designer Fabrizio Viti has included clogs in his collections for several seasons. "Clogs remind me of the 70s, when feminism was on the rise. My sister Michaela wore clogs and long skirts and I saw her power in her sartorial choices. To me, they are the symbol of freedom for women in that era, and how they established their independence from the male gaze." And what about the resurgence today? "Nowadays, clogs serve as another option within the realm of easy footwear. They are easy to slip on, and so fun at the same time. I think that is the reason why women are embracing the clog so much, they remind us of a relaxing time in a moment of tension and uncertainty today." And we could all do with a moment of relaxation!
Gucci have a version with an elevated heel and fancy bamboo buckle while Khaite’s cult clog is set to get as much exposure as the legendary bra-digan Katie Holmes wore from the brand. ASOS have a classic style with studs and a sweet daisy-trimmed version too (currently on sale.) Wear them with your summer dresses right now then switch to jeans when autumn actually hits. However you style your clogs this season, it's certain we’ll hear you coming.
