The collarbone shag is the rebellious cut with the cool-girl length
Just when we thought this years biggest rebel hairstyle, the shag, couldn't get any better, we noticed the minxy cut partnered up with a collarbone sweeping length and now? Brb. Just on the phone with the salon...
Let's be honest, the shag is divisive. It's punky, it's retro and – thanks to the short choppy layers around the crown – a bit of a commitment. Basically, it's a huge departure from the beachy waves that have been filling in for texture since the early noughties.
Overall, it's a pretty fierce statement to make, but hitched up to graze your clavicle, the style shifts from being a little too old-school to feeling fresh, modern and low-key sexy.
The whole vibe of a shag is to take up space and offer up tons of volume, but a shorter chop helps to balance it out and swerve stringy looking ends – especially if your hair is quite fine.
Rather than looking too boxed in, lopping the ends back to just above the collarbone, helps to open up your face and show a little shoulder action (much cooler).
Likewise we're fans of the shaggy bob, which takes the length above your shoulders, but the extra couple of inches this style affords means you get to keep the length and versatility of being able to tie it up and out the way when you want to, which is a major bonus.
Strictly speaking, the style isn't 'new'. Since its '70s hey-day, the collarbone shag has been for a couple of high profile spins. Case in point: Ri-Ri's Grammys appearance, where she paired it with a bleach blonde dye and shadow root (which still looks just as cool today).
Since then, the style had been largely retired until we noticed some of our favourite influencers dust it off.
Chloe Bell, aka @gyspygrandmaa gave it a modern '70s edge with multi-dimensional bronde and natural curls.
Cierra Nia aka @simply.cie mixed it with a mullet for a nod to another huge hair trend, the wolf cut.
And top stylist, James Earnshaw gave the style summer feels with this season's update on rose gold, strawberry peachy.
